New Brembo confusion

New Brembo confusion

Hi all

I have just had my new Brembos delivered but am confused as to which side is which.

The disks are not stamped left or right hand, only says left or right on the box. I have indicated on the following pic how the disks are marked up.

The reason for my confusion is that I have seen pics of cross drilled disks such as:

rotor1.jpg

Or

rotor2.jpg

It seems to me that the drill pattern on these is running in the opposite direction to the indicated direction on my disks. I have emailed the supplier and confirmed that the indicated left and right hand is as you sit in the car.

Has anybody fitted cross drilled disks and can confirm the correct fitting.

Thanks.

See you have the same discs as me (also not fitted yet!)

I don't think the drill pattern is too important in this case. If they were slotted then it might make a slight difference, but not much.

Thanks Andy.

Five weeks by land, not too bad.

Got hit with a £50 bill on dellivery though.

The eatricezone pic is the one that's correct.

Ben

Maybe someone could tell you the way the vanes run on theirs, cos its the way they run thats the big point.

Agreed, but I happen to know that on these discs that the vanes are radial (rather than helical??), so it doesn't make any difference.

Andy

I have no idea what you said, but I will take your word for it. wink.gif

Steve,

helical vanes follow a spiral (helix) into the disk; radial vanes point straight out from the centre.

Vented disks work (unless I'm very wrong... possible!) by throwing air out from the centre of the disk to the rim through centripetal force (much like a centrifuge). This fast moving air carries dust, etc. with it, cleaning the disk.

If helical vanes are put on the wrong way round (with the vane pointing in the direction of travel at the rim) they will try to force air into the vents, reducing and possibly even reversing the cleaning airflow. In the worst case this could result in brake dust being forced out at the hub where it will get thrown outside the disk, maybe back onto the braking surfaces. When they are pointing the right way the air flows aroung the rim of the disk, helping to suck air out of the vents.

With radial vanes, air is not forced into the disk either way round so, as AndyP says, it makes no difference.

As for the cross-drills, as long as they are evenly spaced and don't interfere with the vanes I don;t think it makes any difference how they are laid out.

what Andy means is that the vanes run out from the centre in straight line, not curved outwards.

however, it doesnt matter for radial, assuming they run out from the centre, rather than as a tangent from the hub.

for slotted disks, the difference between one way around and the other is performance.

if the slot leads into the pad from the outside, then you get better brake performance but faster pad wear and increased brake noise

if the slot leads into the pad from the inside each of the previous conditions are reduced, and you get slightly better dispersion of gas and residue, but not enough to make a point of.
