What is going on?

I work for Airbus and thank god that something as big as the A380 is still being part made here in the UK!

This govt wants a sodding wake up call!

My experience of working for the motoring industry in this country is Ford at Dagenham shut down, followed by Vauxhall at Luton and now Vauxhall are doing this! I feel very sorry for the workers.

No you don't you liar! LMFAO :D

This country Sucks, the gov are all sitting in London and only think of the trade that goes on in there.

Now who has to pay for all the ppl on ht Dole? FFS we will be a 3rd wolrd country if it carries on.

I worked my way through a manufacturing company from being 18/19. Last year the company closed and I am starting at the bottom again somewhere else which is going the same way, there isn't many firms for me to try to get work from as lots of firms have also shut down, so I am trying to get out of it altogether. This country is rapidly becoming a service industry country.

Do we have a manufacturing industry in this country?

NO!

If we can't even compete with Europe, how the feck are we gonna compete with the Far East!

When the grovernment won't listen to it's experts and even amends there reports what can you do. Lets have a few demontrations and some riots please ;) :D :D

I vote for a civil war! My problem is I know the era of proper apprenticeships has gone and in about 10-15 years there will be a lack of skilled people in all fields, this is where I could have held my own but can't say where I'll be in 10-15 years, lol

Just bashing a piece of metal is not going to keep jobs in the UK. And we have never really been anygood at owning and running mass manufacturing industry. But foriegn owned manufactures with plants in the UK works well. We are now making more cars here in the UK since the early 70's.

As a Brummie the demise of Rover was sad but they made crap cars - the management was crap, workers not motivated as they could be and you could smell the decay in the air at Longbridge, ive been there and saw it.

However doing specialised small to medium engineering and manufacturing the UK can excel at. We have the most expertise in the world at motorsport.

I have friends and relatives in engineering. The good ones have not had a problem getting a new job with some reskilling in CAD and CAM.

It's not just the UK mate.

I work for Trabant in East Germany but trade has been slow since the wall came down and they started importing the 300ZX.

Don't the Japanese use us a cheap labour?

Aren't Nissans made in the UK?

I work for Nissan at the factory in Washington. Believe me, the wage bill in the UK is just as high as it is in Japan. They didn't opt to manufacture cars in the NE of England because of cheap labour. It was mainly down to logistics and tax laws for selling Japanese built cars in countries like France, Italy & Germany. They make approx 500,000 cars/trucks in Washington & Barcelona and they are exempt from these taxes as they are classed as European vehicles.

The current problem however is about labour rates and also logistics. Many car manufacturers are opening new plants in former eastern European countries (Hungary, Romania, Slovakia). These are worrying times for all car workers in Western Europe. 9 major plants have closed in Western Europe recently and the same number has opened in these low cost countries. Nissan has, only last week, announced that they plan to invest £200M in a brand new plant in St. Petersburg in the Soviet Union. You can imagine how much the wage bill will be there.

As well as paying less tax.

I believe that Massy Furguson went to France because it was cheaper to run the factory there, but still cheaper to build in U.K.

Under the tories companies were aloud to make profits and build, but now Gordon Brown just steals it all off them.

I work for the largest engine manufacturer in the world, and over the last 5 years they have opened plants in India and China, makes my arse twitch I can tell you.

Apprentices still exist, I'm one. Although if they keep ****ing me about over my wages then I might not be for much longer.

I did my first year training at an agency that specialises in apprenticeships, so i see lots of them.
