Do any of the upgrade tubs,i.e. HKS, GREDDY etc, make provision for the turbo coolant pipes? ;)

Featured Replies

i know a few people with upgrades braze off the feeds to the turbos so they dont have coolant going to them all toghether

When you say provision, some turbos are water cooled and some are oil cooled and lubricated only.

Thanks Greg and Mark!-that's what I needed to know as I can't see the point in the coolant pipes on stock tubs??-plenty of turbo cars about without em'!

Suppose what I'm getting at is the Plenum bypass we did on Boldy's at the w/end-why go to tub feeds?-easier to bridge across the rear and do away with even more leak prone plumbing!

precisely, aslong as turbos are getting vital oil, then coolant is not a problem,if you lived in a hot country then i guess it would be more important.

While I got your attention! :D -where does the coolant return to?-2 pipes you can see on the top, through the tubs but then where?

You'll find these days that its only OEM and some Garrett AM Units that retain a water jacket on the turbo for cooling, But with an Oil only cooled turbo, it usually a good idea to go with a good oil cooler as you will notice a rise in oil temps.

Can appriciate that bud, any ideas on the returns? :D

If your car has feeds for water then you are better off using them, the turbos are not designed to be used without them.

On new turbos if you do not connect the water feeds then the guarantee is void :(

had this same debate a while back on the sxoc forume when i owned my s14. Same sort of 2 sided argument, and they never really sorted it, to be honest if it left the factory with it, and the way most of us use our zeds think they are worth having. Any extra cooling has got to be good, although they do seem to be alot more hard work to replace on a zed than a s14.

On a normal water cooled Turbo you cannot do away with the Water feed and returns as it will simply bake the turbo bearings. The oil feed on them simply fills a small gallery where the bearings are housed to lubricate them, Where An oil cooled turbo has a large section in the housing which provides both lubrication to the bearing and cooling.
