Which engine oil is best ?

Hi all,

I'm having my regular engine oil service done by a friend, but need to know which engine oil does everyone recommend ?

Is Mobile 1 oil best ?

Is Semi-Synthetic or Fully-Synthetic oil recommended ?

Where can I purchase the oil at a good price(on the internet if possible) ?

Any help appreciated !

Does anyone know much about Chevron oil. I have some 5-40 full synth for my next change. Any one used it before? I think its wrong cos its green, must be fairy liquid. biggrin.gif

looks like fairly liquid, smells like fairy liquid, tastes like fairy liquid, then it must be....chevron oil.... hehehe

Personally I think that 5 is too thin for our climate. Take a look in the manual :- http://www.300zx.co.uk/tech/manual/manual/ma/011.gif

I use fully synth 10w50 and I change it (and the oil filter) frequently enough that it probably doesn't matter much what I use (so I use a trade oil). Also bear in mind that most oil is the same in that it has to leagally adhere to the same standards. So next time you're in Halfords compare a £30 bottle of Mobil-1 and a £20 bottle of Halfords fully synth and see whether the API numbers are the same.

I would also recommend getting either a magnetic drain plug, or perhaps one of those magstap things for the oil filter to catch the grindings of steel that add to the wear and tear. I have an f-off cobalt magnet stuck to my oil filter !

Feel free to correct me if you think I'm wrong as I'm out of my depth a bit compared to some of you guys but...

Isn't an oil rated at 5 for when its cold still going to be a lot thicker than pretty much any warm oil (eg is 5W-XX thicker when cold than XX-50 when warm?). I suspect it is and would think that the warm rating was more significant.

I have 5W-50 and so far it seems fine. If anything it seems very thick when cold as oil pressure is a lot higher and engine a lot less powerful until its warm. It should still be the same thickness as a 10W-50 when warm, yeah?

I thought thinner when cold would be better as it gets around the engine quicker and easier

Dylan, until your engine is warmed up above xx degress celsius, you don't get full boost.

So this may be why it feels slow.

Safety boost until you reach a safe temperature. wink.gif

You shouldn't be caining it when it's cold anyway!

I don't mean slow on boost, I mean slow at 2000rpm ish on low throttle, no boost involved. Like its very stiff. Oil pressure guage reads above the second marker (drops to just above the first marker when warm). I never cain it when cold.

I use Millers 10/60W Fully Synthetic oil.

No problems, and no oil useage. Its lower enough for winter running, and has a high enough range for Summer driving.
