Is there an easy way to check if an import Targa was originally a Turbo car and not an N/A that got a turbo motor at some stage of its life??

Cant really count front lower bumper lip as loads have been damaged and switched/replaced

What about chassis code? GCZ32 i take it is Turbo and GZ32 is N/A??? any other ways???

Well a N/A converted to TT in the UK is very very rare and your unlikely to come across one. Its a massive job, not as simple as a straight engine swap.

The only ones I have heard about in the UK is a couple of Convertables, converted to TT as the convertable only came as N/A.

VIn plate will tell you, if you think you have come across such a vehicle, although Im not sure the exact VIN number differences.

does it really matter. only from an insurance point of view i assume it would be classified as a major modifcation.

The VIN details are in the general information section of the FSM:

General Information

If the model number (on the VIN plate to the left of the bonnet catch) contains an S, it is a TT, if not it isn't, likewise if it contains an A it is (or at least was) an Automatic.

went and looked at it tonight, No hicas, N/A front end, - bad respray, noisy clutch, wouldnt boost past 4psi and the guy was looking £4000- it also had a rear tub fitted which came with its own built in shower - anyone in N.I steer clear of this car!!!!!!!!!
