Best deal I managed on tyres was from a place called Headley Tyres who are between Basingstoke & Reading.

Price for 245/40Z18 front and 265/35Z18 rear Pirelli PZeros was £641. This was much cheaper than any other quote I had and they had the tyres in stock. It was a bit of a trek for me but well worth it.

They also stock SO2s although they didn't have the rears in - and with snow promised the next day and a drive to the New Forest planned, I couldn't afford to wait and stay on slicks any longer.

Their phone number is 01635 268384.

My full set of S02s was £560 from Felton Tyres in Slough. (inc fitting, vat etc)

in the next six months or so im told the price of tyres will come down or the price of runners will which is good news for all of us

Jez, just to make sure (!), where they 16"s or 18"s ?

Dave

Stock wheels, 16s, I missed your 18" bit.

I did ask about 18"s in S02s, they were something like £850 to £900 fitted. Your price is good, what do they charge for SO2s in 18s?

SO2s were pretty much the same - about a fiver more each. They didn't have the rears in stock but could get them at one day's notice. I wanted to try going back to the Pirellis though because although the SO2 is definitely a stickier tyre, my latest set of rears have only lasted me 6 months and that's with traction control. The Pirellis lasted me around 9 months without traction before.

my 265 30 18s Falkens on the rear seem to have only lasted around 5000 miles with the inner edges going first. Nearside is much more worn than offside which has a good few mms left. Suspect n/s shock is u/s. Maybe Shorty had a heavy right foot before me. Fronts are fine.

Was quoted £130 Hankook, £170 Falken and Toyo,£200 for Yoko all inc. What miles should be expected and which is best on a z?

I tried Falken on my 16" wheels and only managed 4000 miles before the rears were slick.

And that's without driving using the Toole handbook :-)

My Pirelli's seem to be wearing much better.

I had avon zz1's last year and got almost 18,000 miles on them, but had some scary times in the wet...

I will have to see what my s02's wear like this year.

The wet performance is already worth the extra money for them over any others.

Having got through a set of tyres in 3 weeks with my 15 degrees wheel alignment problem I have had to resort to a set of 245-45-16 Marshall tyres for £65 each! I'm sure the compund will be so hard It will be like a bar of soap in the wet!

Craig,

Is this thread competing with the Light Bulb thread yet? LOL

PS. I have Fulda Extremo all around because I could not afford premium tyres in 245 and 285 sizes. Oh....and they are pants

i know you guys pour scorn on runners but you wanna see the quality of the 18'' runners automotif have in manchester they are like new and for the amount of time the tyres last you lot anyway why blow coin on a brand new tyre lets face we all light up the rears at least once a week

  • 3 weeks later...

My Jap TT has 17" wheels and the tyre prices seem the same as for the 18's you guys are quoting.

I've got new 225 Yoko's on the front (fitted before I got the car) but 255 Bridgestones on the rear.

Should I go for matching Yoko's at the back or are they too soft wearing to last?

Pirelli's seem very good value too.

Though I'd join in on this one!!

I have Continental Sport Contact tyres - they cost £95 quid each for 225's (Jap import) and they are wearing very well - and give excellent grip in the dry and very good wet grip - I have an auto and cant spin them from a standing start in the wet....instant grip, although if you are going round a corner and accidentally floor the accelerator (foot slipped...) then they do break then! Well pleased with them though.

Gentlement, don't tell me that you do NOT know what the UTQG is !!!!

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/utqg.htm

http://www.majortire.com/utqg.htm

And yes...it IS written even on european tires..

(TEST PROCEDURE)

* Run a car with test tires mounted till 6,400 miles (10,300kms) pass.

(The tire is tested in convoy with a "base" tire so as to eliminate the variable of temperature and road surface.)

* Measure the tread depth after each 800 miles (1287kms) run.

* Then the projected worn out tire life is calculated. Fixing that 30,000 miles (48,279kms) as 100% Index.

You got to understand the limits of the system...i.e. it's not because a tire with an UTQG of 100 can do XXXX Miles on a specific car, that a different tire with an UTQG of 200 can do 2 * XXXX Miles on your car.

However...if you always drive the same way, it DOES mean that ON YOUR CAR, with YOU as a drive....a XXX tire with an UTQG of 300 will last THREE TIMES MORE than an YYY tire with an UTQG of 100.

So..if the XXX/UTQG100 tire costs UKP 100, and the YYY/UTQG300 tire costs UKP 180..if you decide to get the UKP 100 one....you are LOSING money in the long turn.

On MY car, I but tires with the following caracteristics

Treadwear 300

Traction A or AA

Temperature A

And don't be fooled by people who tell you that a high UTQG tire can be a high perf one.

Is the following....

Accel G:0.98

Breaking G:1.08

Left G:1.07

Right G:1.05

Good enough for you ?....it is for me !!

Zee you

Henri
