hi guys,

i'm getting a loud crunching noise when i change gear from 3rd to 4th and 5th to 4th. it doesn't really matter what kind or rpm but it doesn't seem to happen at low speed. i'm also getting some vibration through the clutch pedal in 3rd 4th and 5th. anyone got any ideas? if it is the gearbox, how much will a new/reconditioned one cost me?

cheers

alex.

For my gearbox to be dropped and all the synchromesh renewed and general overhall I was quoted £450 plus VAT but that was mates rates.

try changing the gearbox fluid to redline mt90

cheers lads. i'll give that gearbox fluid a go before i do anything else.

mt90's really expensive - you might want to drain the fluid first and check for debris. If you find plenty then replace the fluid with a cheap oil - just to get it to the gearbox specialist. And when he's replaced all of the internals, check what fluid he recommends. I say this as I believe MT90 stresses the syncro's...

Good luck

stresses the synchros??? where do you get that from???

i have redline in mine and its absolutely fine and shifts great same on most of the other members cars.

as for expensive, i got 4 bottles on ebay for 25 quid all in, just keep an eye on ebay for cheap bottles.

also the gearbox specialist i spoke to also reccomended redline for my car as its a performance oil for performance cars and high tolerance boxes.

since changing mine my shifts are smoother and quicker

As said below it is the synchros, I change my oil to redline hoping it would sort it like a few others have claimed however it still crunches, Its down to the CRAP stock boxes that Nissan fitted LOL

4th gear syncro can be weak point on pre 1994 manual gearboxes, usually at higher mileages, and new oil is said to usually cure it.

cheers for all the advice guys. i'll change the fluid first and see what happens. don't really want to be spending loads on a new/recon 'box if a simple oil change will cure it.
