As i understand it jap fuel is 99RON, optimax is 97RON and premium unleaded is 95RON.

 

As optimax is the closest you can get (without additive) to the jap fuel I always use it but I just put 30 quid in at 99.9p and it only took my fuel gauge to half! Also I just did a 150mph run up the dual carrage way so used most of it already!

optimax is 98ron, normal UK super unleaded is 97ron. remember the Zed takes 72litres to fill up! got a shock the first time I filled one up. Sainsburys do a super unleaded which is usually only a couple pence more than their standard unleaded.

I use 95 in my jap NA, it performs ok no faults or trouble everything seems normal, i think you will be lower on bhp though.

i am also experiencing slight hesitation on moving off at traffic lights it could be because of the fuel but i am not sure. don’t know about TTs though.

I think it would be fine in an NA but i always try and use opitmaz in my turbo cars, noticed a small performace increase in my old 620ti but that has a uk enjine not jap. I'm just wondering if its safe to use normal fuel when im skint?

I think unless you have a highly tuned and modded engine if would be ok if you alternated every 2 or 3 tankfuls with optimax.

 

Alternatively, you could get the ECU mapped for 95ron

IIRC it is not advisable to use anything other than the Optimax type fuels on Z's, or any performance engine and at the end of the day it may cost more but it is slightly more economical annd so probably balances itself out...

well think about it guys, its about what 70p per £10 more expensive? not worth fookin your zed for such little ammount of money, especially if your running it at those kind of speeds (which we all assume 150 on a private dual carriageway i hope!) youll get det if your booting it using cheap fuel. oh and optimax is proven by dyno to be far more effective than any of the premuim fuels.

There has been a lot of discussion about this in the last few months with the advent of tescos 99 ron fuel, a lot of tests carried out. optimax still gives the best igniton advance on the test beds and still gives the better det protection, for the sake of £5 saving on a tank of petrol it doesnt make scense

I think if you put £60 in you will get a full tank........ :dance:

Also if you think you will spot DET by the temp gauge moving forget it, the temp gauge on the 300ZX wouldnt move for a apocolypse let alone DET, the temp gauge on our cars will quite happily sit in the middle whilst the car starts cooking itself, if it does go up then you are already overheating and its getting a bit late...hehe.

Its looks like Tesco’s might have cocked up with their 99ron fuel, or been applying their dodgy grocery practices to selling fuel.

When you think about it, Tesco must buy from one of the main distributors, and there are only two main products standard and super, I’d guess that optimax and BP ultimate are only available directly from those suppliers, Tesco could have commissioned a 99ron fuel just for themselves, but they would have to target performance car users, rather than family car users, its pretty clear that Tesco and Sainsbury are targeting the later.

 

Wouldn’t have helped me as my nearest optima is a 14 round trip away, but Tesco is a 26 mile round trip.

Guidelines for Europe are to use at least 95 RON. 91 can be used temporalily but under the following precautions. Have tank only partly filled with 91 and fill up with 95+ asap. Avoid full throttle driving and abrupt acceleration.

This is taken from UK handbook however J Spec may be different still.

I have an aftermaket water temp gauge with normaly sits between 155 and 170F (about 68 - 75c) ish. The oem one always sits in the middle and gets there way before my aftermaket one gets anywhere near normal running temp > so i ignor the oem one anyway.

Tesco did comission a 99ron for themselves, from Esso.

 

now, somebody is saying it was never 99ron in the first place :confused: I expect its down more to demand. Performance car drivers still wary of Supermarket fuels.

yep, £30 is half a tank. £60 is about full.

 

It can be false economy to use cheaper fuels as You will get better fuel economy on optimax!
