Yep, becuase auto's benefit from the brake-torque launch method which involves keeping the car stationary by holding the brakes with the left foot, while using the right foot to rev up the engine against the torque converter which preloads the entire drivetrain and by design the autobox then helps absorb the shock, reducing wheelspin.

Not something you really want to be doing on a standard autobox on the road, but beneficial with uprated gearboxes on the strip.

Couldn't you do this with a carbon clutch on a manual set up?

Would be tricky, You would need to flucuate the clutch and accelerator at same time to hold it at the exact biting point to load the car, while holding the brakes on hard. Be easier with 3 legs though :)

Would severely shorten even a Carbon clutches life

also have you seen how quick they get through the gears in drag racers? Theres no way you would be able to run a 4s 1/4 shifting manually.

A mate rode a proper drag bike once and it had only two gears, on a shift button. You couldn't shut the throttle till it was flat out in top or it'd knacker the box!
