Simple question.

I'm running my Z as a second car. This is expensive. It makes more sense to just keep one - my Z. Given that problems are usually expensive to put right, is commuting a viable proposition in my moddified Z? It would have to run 70mls daily.

Can you use it as a reliable commuter car while keeping your hands out off your pockets?

It's only steep at the pump if you're foot is heavy on the pedal. ;)

No danger of my speeding on the way to work anway - motorway but all bar 5 miles of it is contraflow and cones. Digging up the road, again.

I commuted in her today for the first ime and it was lush. Just thinkin about the miles I'm putting on her and the cost of running her into the ground.

well i now drive a 3.0 senator to work to save on fuel lol

i use my zed sometimes for work and hate it,its so rock hard on suspension. on decent roads its fine, prefer my senator for work as it more relaxing to drive. plus it saves me a bomb

Rough estimate to run another car:

£300 Quid insurance

£200 Parts and Mot

£120 Quid Tax

70 miles x 5 days x 50 weeks = 17500 miles at 30mpg = 2651litres

Total Petrol = £2439 per year in petrol

Total Cost = £3059 per year to run another car on the commute

Rough petrol estimate to run zed on the commute (based on my NA)

70 miles x 5 days x 50 weeks = 17500 miles at 19mpg = 4186litres

Total Petrol = £3851

Difference in petrol is £3851-£2439 = £1412 difference

So i am being a little pessimistic here but on average i get about 19 to the gallon in my NA mixture of motorway and city/roadworks but still you'll be saving yourself £792 a year by running a smaller car that distance

NOTE: on a couple of trips to london i have managed 254 miles on 35 quids worth of petrol just running at a solid 60-65 on cruise control which equates to 35 to the gallon which is damn impressive for a 3 litre engine but for 70 miles expect about 19-26 mpg because day to day you will have the odd thrash and you will burn off 5 quid like that, if you're stuck in roadworks etc, it eats petrol. I only do about 100 miles a week max as i work from home so i use it as a day to day car.

Plus my final thing is as a day to day car you forget just how special it is to drive hard hence i don't drive mine much so i enjoy it every time

I used to Z to commute for about 5 years, doing about 8-12K per year. It was only when circumstances changed and my mileage went up to 20K per year that I bought a cheap diesel.

It does save a lot though, double the mpg plus tires cost half as much and last 5 times longer etc

I don't know how people afford to run their Zed everyday doing loads of mileage, you all must be earning far to much money!!! :D If I was you I'd still have a cheap daily driver and a F355 as my toy ;)

I'd say the biggest issue with running a zed as your only car would not be the cost, but if (when) it went wrong you would be unable to get to work while its being repaired, which is a substancial problem.

I've got my mini as a backup, now with uber sexy 600 quid red and black leather seats :)

I would love to use my car more often. commuting is not even a consideration I do on average 1200 miles a week and my astravan is less than a year old and covered 45000 miles. I also have an every day use car and its not a lot cheaper to run its a volvo T5 estate. BUT! I want my 300 as an on-going project and I want to keep useage to a minimum. If you can afford to keep another car then do so It will keep your 300 in tip top condition and you dont have the worries of "is it going to start this morning". All IMO. The Nissan 300zx is fast becoming a cheap sports car, loads of them are being used and abused and in a few years I predict the number of zeds on the road is going to diminish and then it will become a classic sort after car. Thats when everyone will want one. We will then be in a better position to demand far better and more realistic prices should any of us decide to sell up.

All in all: keep it good and enjoy it for longer mate.

I drive my Zed to work an back about 110mls per week plus trip to my nans (170 mls round trip every other weekend).

Im finding it tough on fuel consumption (and no I dont hack it). I just gone and got a mini cooper 1.3i 85bhp conversion for my commuting! cheap to insure, run and tax etc..keep the Zed for my mate to take to work (few miles a day) and drive Zed t weekends or occasional long trips.

Fact ive been waiting 3 months for a new prop from Japan has something to do with it!!

ive always had an everyday car for comuting and the winter months, but a couple of years ago my everyday car brokedown and was out of use for about 6weeks so had to use the zed i did 26miles a day cost me £55 a week, was absolutley crippling me financialy, no way id be able to do it week in week out and thats not including wear and tear bills (tyres etc.)

plus i dont want to put loads of miles on it, lol.

I think what Bantambunny sed is true, if you use it to often it'll become the 'norm' and the excitement you get from it will be erroded. I've limited myself to only taking it out when its dry,my missus thinks this is bizzare and 'sad', am I the only one who does this ?

nope, im sad aswell, my zed hibernates october till late march, its only ever seen snow once and rain about 4 times

I'm still commuting in my Z. So far, she seems to love it: as good as gold. I can tell straight away that fuel will be the big expense. I think I'll try to keep my second car going - just to keep my Z tight. The guys I work beside think she's a doll - and they are right.
