Army phoned today about me going into the office signing my life away tommorow and I told em I want out instead...

Started about a year ago when i was in a bad relationship, work wasnt going too well so i though fook it im joing up.

Did my selection for Royal Military Police got in and was given date for 1st May 2006 to join training.

I was in the Infantry TA for 3 years so i know i could hack it,its just from what i can gather from talking to people who are in the services and those who have left that its not whats its cracked up to be.Ive been told the travellings good and the social drinking etc but the rest is pretty much crap, and all the stuff in the press at the moment......oh yes and couldnt leave the Zed behind!(oh and the girlfriend)

Basically I may have made a mistake because its a good career but im stil only 23 so ive got a few years yet.

maybe i should join the Police instead?

Thats why you have to do things yourself mate, there are actually quite a lot of ways to do well out of it providing you put the time in yourself. I spent nearly a year studying for my cisco and microsoft qualifications while in the Marines. I was doing my normal job as well, but I had plenty of time to work on the courses. Its just hard motivating yourself because not many other people do it. Also you can move into a specialised area and that sets you up for the future as well. Plus they now do a thing called extended learning credits that gives you either 3k over three years or 6k over 3 years depending on your service time. I've left but I'll be paying for my higher level Cisco courses through the MOD with this money, which is a good thing as my new employer wont pay anywhere near as much as this for courses.

Jack: would be good to meet mate, I've not had a chance to go to any meets up here yet either.

Royal, I knew Bessbrook when it was just an ordinary police station, used to stop there for a cuppa on night patrol, yes it was hard then, was based in Gough Barracks in Armagh and spent my 18th birthday on top of a 3 story building in 6ins snow, something you don't forget.

Its closed down now hasn't it?? and to think it used to be Europe's busiest heliport. I think I could probably drive the road from Lisburn to Bessbrook in my sleep I did it that many times (in fact I probably did-lol).

We were in Newton Hamilton for a while and the boss put an advert on orders saying that 'due to the work commitments in afghanistan there are spaces on the SBS under water knife fighting course (!) anyone interested fill in an application form and hand it to their team leader!' A new lad fell for it and put his form in so we sent him on the helicopter with a rubber dagger and a diving mask to Bessbrook to do the course. He only realised when he got there and everyone was p*ssing themselves that he'd been had haha! The bug*ers got me as well after I'd spoke some (very poor) french to some people who had had an accident in town. They said I was going to be a translater for a visiting VIP, I was down waiting on the helipad nervously practicing my french before the loudspeakers announced I'd been had!

Well im still in and going strong bud. At the moment im sitting writing to you from Afgan. As said its what you make of it. There are alot of benifits and pit falls but as said before isnt there these factors in any part of life. Ive had good times and shat but as they say 'take it on the chin' & get on with it. Get a trade though. If you did sign up you wouldnt be signing your life away bud. They will give you chances to get out along the way.
