Army phoned today about me going into the office signing my life away tommorow and I told em I want out instead...

Started about a year ago when i was in a bad relationship, work wasnt going too well so i though fook it im joing up.

Did my selection for Royal Military Police got in and was given date for 1st May 2006 to join training.

I was in the Infantry TA for 3 years so i know i could hack it,its just from what i can gather from talking to people who are in the services and those who have left that its not whats its cracked up to be.Ive been told the travellings good and the social drinking etc but the rest is pretty much crap, and all the stuff in the press at the moment......oh yes and couldnt leave the Zed behind!(oh and the girlfriend)

Basically I may have made a mistake because its a good career but im stil only 23 so ive got a few years yet.

maybe i should join the Police instead?

i'D TRY FOR THE POLICE

Cheaper Insurance-Though i wouldnt mind doing Traffic Police and trying to catch the rest of you!

Who said Police bribery was dead lol!

Why does it always seem that joining the armed forces is only because something went wrong. Surely armed forces gives enough benefits and job prospects to actually get some people wanting to join as their first choice in life instead of doing it after failed others.

At least you chose not to do it before you were commited too much. The police also offer good benefits to their employees. Give them a shout and see what you say to you. Also on another note, Nuclear police (check http://www.cnc.police.uk/) get paid very well (for requiring no qualifications) and they just sit on their fat ar*es all day. The good thing about joining the CNC is that you would be fire arms trained also, plus they have the same rights as normal police by the end of this year. That means you could always change over once done.

Hi m8 I did 18 years in the mob and if you are having second thoughts about it now then it probably isn't the thing for you, you have to give 100% commitment in order to enjoy it. That said if you do decide to join up and give it your all then you will have a good time. But why the monkeys they are universally detested by every squaddie in the Army.

I did 9 years mate. best thing that happened and worse thing that happened.

The worse thing by far is the impression they give of the great brotherhood. Thats fine till the day you leave, then your jobless and familyless and they dont want to know you.

Yep..I did 9 years as a techie trade and walked into a job when I left...I loved every minute of my time...

Security tends to be mind numbingly boring and poorly paid, what have you got lose by trying police, decent pay and still a decent pension plus retire before you reach 60! However don't expect to walk straight into traffic police, will have to at least 2 years (probation) and then some more!

i've done nearly 4 years in a techie trade with the raf and i have to say i've loved it. however the b.s and waiting around is not what i want to do now so i'm getting out to go to uni. i wouldn't ever tell someone not to go in but deffo make sure its what you want to do before you go.

Alex.

As said above mate, it really is what you make of it. EVERYONE in the forces says its shit at some point, its a forces perogative to moan and winge :-). Its just because you spend a lot of time hanging around doing bugger all and getting bored. However if you are prepared to push the boat a bit then there are opportunities to do things you will never do outside. Usually the people who moan are the ones who don't get off there arse and get on trips or sports clubs etc. I did 6 1/2 years in the Royal Marines and went to the jungle, desert, arctic, jumped out of planes, did lots of time in the mountains, represented britain in martial arts, and plus managed to wrangle my way into an IT job that has enabled me to walk straight into one in civvy street. I will say though that its all off my own back. They got me involved in the IT networking because I had an IT history but wouldn't give me the civilian courses, so I studied my arse off for a year and then left the Marines (and got a pay rise :) ). It really is what you make of it. If you are thinking of the long term I'd recommend going into something that gives you career options (RMP, techie or whatever). Theres not many vacancies on civvy street for sniper. Dave

likewise mate ive been in the parachute regiment for 4 years and have signed off (leaving) very hard to summarize, ive had some of the best times of my life, but also some of the hardest and occasionaly saddest. the social life is second to none and im gonna miss it but the way i look at it is great fun and got a lot out of it but i cant do it forever so might as well get out while im still young and can do something else. i wouldnt rule out doing it, but at the same time id join something u can get a trade out of, as being a grunt maybe more fun but when it comes to the end your not left with many skills u can use as a civvy. good luck whatever u decide.

My girlfriends dad is in the RAF and he told me its a great laugh sometimes when he was young. He joined at 16 and has told me loads of stories of what they used to get up to in the Desert in the first war.but now hes leaving hes pretty much stuck for what he is going to do now and will be on less money when he leaves the RAF than his pals who joined as tea boys at Norwich Union etc who have now worked their way up.

Well said mate, just about sums it up.

I joined for the experience, not as a career and I met some fookin brilliant fellas, had a great laugh and some very trying times.

I did four years then buggered off, TBH it was only a matter of time until my number came up, and that is what made me leave. I guess I just like my limbs where they are supposed to be.

Yeah, I think the lifestyle is particuarly unhealthy. The average lifespan of an infantry soldier is 55 yrs you know! A lot of the old boys I know who have done a full career are dropping off, or had to get amputated limbs and stuff. Its quite sad. They look 20yrs older than they are. I know I can push myself till I collapse, theres just nothing to be gained from proving it anymore!

Ouch thats rough mate. We were in South Armagh and it was just a waste of 6mths nothing going on (good I suppose) but stuck in the SF base. Then my feckin mate blew his own head off  never forgave him for it :slap: .

Ought to go to his grave but still find it hard to come to terms with. Arsehole thing to do to yourself and family. RIP Ratty.

fookin ell royal, i take it u were at forkhill, we were told someone offed themselves in sangar 3, always thought it was a story. sorry to hear that mate, fookin likewise we ended up doing 8 months in south armagh, what a waste of time! while everyone else deployed on telic 1. done close to a year in iraq on two seperate tours and have to say theyve just been a waste of time 2. just snaps u how much effort u put into training to end up going on ops just to stag on.

Hi guys, I was one of the first soldiers that went out to Northern Ireland in 1969/1970, lost two of my mates down in South Armagh, it still haunts me to this day. But the time I was in the forces was for me the best time of my life. But Kamikaze if you have any doubts at all, now is the time to bail out, you r still young enough to consider it another time.

Jack, maybe you took over from us? it was paras, but I can't remember which battalion. I was there with 42cdo. My mate topped himself in Bessbrook in the armoury with the CO's pistol (at least he had a sense of humour with it). Know what you mean about the stag on thing, bloody nightmare. My grandad was a Para by the way, he dropped just after the gliders to take pegasus bridge.

Zevoguy50, one of my friends dads was out there then with the LI and before that. Hard work then I reckon mate.

Not to put a downer on the forces though for Kamikaze, I still don't regret a moment of it, there is so much you can do and see its certainly worthwhile, really changes your outlook on life.

Dave

pretty sure we did mate yeah, end of 2002? we were only there for a 6 month tour which got extended by two months while everyone else went on telic 1! snapping!! spent most of the time at forkhill, a bit at besbrook, funnily enough one of our ruperts had an ND in the armoury there with a pistol, maybe a curse?! have to have a meet sometime when i get back to the kent, swing the lantern. as i havnt been to any meets yet as only just bought the beast with all the money saved out here.

and kamikaze, i guess if i had the choice to do it all again i would, its hard and theres times its sh!te but u still dont regret it, youd certainly be joining at an interesting time way things are in the world. good luck whatever u decide m8
