The beast is due for another service and I'm half getting sick of my local NISSAN gargage prices..it's more the attitude of them presently you with 600 quid bills and thinking it's normal..

They are good though, and have always done what I've asked them to do, including big jobs with no probs....

However Silvia is 50 miles down the road, and I can't help wondering if they'd be better ? In particular one of my turbos smokes a bit.. nowt to worry about, but (as johnny will testify), it's only working because of the back pressure still coming from the cats (I have the mongoose system fitted).

So, I'm half considering getting the turbos reconded, cats removed and the timing tweaked (ala SE's version of the chipping).

Leaving aside the heating opinions about whether the timing stuff works or not...what are peoples opinions of SE. What is their hourly rate, service charges, etc ?

I also think I may need rear shocks, and am wondering if konis or whatever might be cheaper than NISSAN stuff ??

stu..

p.s. must be 9 months since I was last on forum.. appo - loggies for just appearing again.. I've been changing jobs, houses, the lot.. even got another car ! (as well as 300 :-) )

Timing should realy be around 15deg, how and why do they tweak timing if they now chip?

Last time I spoke to Silvia, about a year ago, they said they didn't belive in chipping and it was not necessary. Apparently they used to counter-act detination worries by putting back the timing and not worry about fuel maps. Strange people, putting back the timing reduces a large % of the gain receved from increasing the PSI.

Maybe you have been misled?

Ignition timing adjustment is not related to chipping the ecu!

SE are more than likely have a cheaper hourly rate than you Nissan garage depending on the size of your dealer and therefore would probably be a cheaper option.

However, the choice is yours on who does the job.

I can put you in contact with a fully qualified Nissan technician / engineer in Kent who knows the Z32 engine inside out and is the only person I trust to work on my Z.

Let me know if your interested as he would be happy to replace the turbo's, shocks and cats.

Steve

Yup, I would recommend the same Guy. Pretty much the only guy I would trust on my Z too.

I have used many of these so called experts and don't have much to say about them other than I would never let them loose on my Z again. Read my earlier thread and you will know what I am talking about.

Options Motorsport in Silverstone have received a good write-up and seem very knowledgeable but I have not used them myself.

Steve - I will be seeing Darren on Saturday so I might have to gate crash your gaff and pass on those goodies ordered from Courtesy.

Andy

Do it yourself, tis a peice of piss honest.

seriously it aint to bad if you know a Socket from a Pry bar, and have a double garage.

See in a few weeks my Idiots guide to Engine Removal Tech !!!

Gutting / Removing the Cats is a peice of Piss but will cause your rear seal to fail under load if it is already smoking, Simple to do unless you have the arms of a 8 year old school girl. You may need replacement bolts tho!!

Timing tweeks aren't too bad, Altho i think you are unclear as to how they work. A timing tweek will give you small power gains if any as you are basically adjusting the timing to its optimum position. Without going into the technical side of it SE Timing mod, actually reduced HP but prevents Detonation which there Boost upgrade would other wise cause.

If you want rear shox have a word with Johnny about Tockico ones, They are cheaper and better than Nissan Stock Replacements.

"Ignition timing adjustment is not related to chipping the ecu!"

I was trying not to be blunt, but to save confusion I might as well!....LOL...

As far as I've heard and seen, SEs form of a timing tweak is not to get that little bit more out of the engine, but to retard it a few degrees to prevent detonation,... which they cause in the first place by turning up the boost and not adjusting the other parameters such as fuel.

i would not go near Silvia Engineering as i had a really bad experience with them

rathwer go elsewhere

lol well so do i but in a lot of words you cant say on the net lol

Warren, your not normally reluctant to say your bit. lol

What's the status of your Z at the moment? Did the parts get sent back to the states because of the tax?

When you coming back?

Steve

come on guys, we've been down this road a few times before.

we know that there are some disgruntled ex-Silvia customers on here, but we also know there are as many happy Silvia customers.

this is a discussion that goes nowhere.

it's 50/50, 6 and 2 3's, etc..etc..

everyone's experiences are different, so we need to keep that in mind.

If EVERYONE had a bad Silvia experience then i wouldn't be writing this, but they haven't.

like craig says i say no more.

my car is almost ready just waiting for the pistons i think, in the end i am repalcing all the pistons with factory units.

so probably within the next two weeks i would imagine.

Im new to this 300zx ownership business but need some constructive advice my zx has exhaust and air filters sorted and I was thinking of having SE do one of there boost upgrades but after reading some of these posts I am slightly bewildered! can anyone offer an opinion, is this a good way to go ?if not what would be the alternative (and safe) natural tuning progression? help!!

I have had the boost on my Z upgraded by Silvia when the Turbo's were replaced, they did it cheap as the engine was out. The car definetly pulls harder than before. To put your mind at rest as to the power increase silvia will give you test results before and after from a rolling road if you require it but will charge for this service. I don't know what bad experiences people have had but in the two years that I have taken my car to silvia they have been helpful, and very reliable. The one time they did damage a pipe on my aircon they paid for the replacement and the re-gas.

Paul.

Before adding any kind of performance upgrade. I will say only this. I have seen many so called upgrades by performance companies who are happy to sell you there product but the standard of work can be frightening. Remember when things go wrong on a Z you better make sure you have been kicking the arse out of overtime.

I will recommend you speak to either Kiki at Option Motorsport or Steve.E`s mechanic if you are based down South or give Gary or Paul a call if you are from the North.

Also Luke at the Z Centre will give you friendly advice. Mention Johnny at Grasshopper and I am 100% sure you will be more than happy with the level of service.

I can sy that can`t I Nico and Craig?

Nico give me a call. Got some great gossip from the Autosport N.E.C

RegardZ

Johnny

im not going there but just remeber we all have different experiences mine was bad others have been good.

but do your homework as there way is definatly not the way to go.

you should have your ecu done, that is the next step.

i have a MINES ecu, but maby jwt from america is a good option

good luck

PaulR:

I would also reccomend you get at least a JWT ecu (and wastegate line tips included) to upgrade to to 13.5psi+, at the same time the JWT POP or K&N/Stillen type equivilent will give you a nice increase.

If you're in the market for an exhuast (which also gives a good increase) I would reccomend you buy direct from the US or UK yourself as fitting is bog-standard. You may also want to get some new rubber exhaust mounts from Nissan at the same time.

I usually buy direct from the states for such items beacuse of the good prices and vast range of parts for the 300, people like www.turboimports.com for bog standard upgrade parts, or sgpracing/avalon etc for others, my last set of upgrades came from Courtesy Nissan in Texas.

Apart from the amount of duty/vat and postage on items such as exhausts, it's not always the best option to buy from the states. I got my traction and a few other bits from Johnny who is also finding me some big 18" ...

Jez.

Hey Jez, I couldn't help notice that your wheels are considerably smaller than mine!!

lol

Wheel 'ave less of that, Mr E!!!

One day you'll be saying that about the turbos too!

I have to agree with you that any more power when it's damp, like this month, doesn't really get you anywhere, but that's not the point is it... !!!

Of course with people like the one's down your local stereo shop, you appear to have an extra 50bhp every time someone opens their gob!

I've been going to Silvia for year or more. No problems. What i like about them is that they don't talk the load of b***cks you hear from other tuners who are just after selling you a new overpriced gadget to add another 50bhp (yeh right!). Of course if its gadgets you want ...The real world is always somewhat less wonderful than in the product brochure. And silvia will dyno their claims.
