hi guys,

my plan is too buy 92 tt 300zx manual early next year, however i have come across a 91 tt manual at a salvage's today. the engine, manual box, tubs and basically all the rest besides the shell is available. the car is a J reg import, and the clocks are still in km. the odometer is reading 120km. the engine looks clean and im really interested in it as an engine to take apart and re build over the summer as a project to get to know the engine ready for when i buy mine.

can anyone advise my on how much this is worth roughly?

their asking around £400 for engine and tubs, but i kno i can get them down.

any tell tale sales that the engine is on the way out that i can look for physically on the engine? (longshot i know)

many thanks,

kesh

Hey Kesh

Id say if its done 70,000 miles then its at least run in but might be much worse and you can never tell / breakers always tell you well if its no good well take it back but after how much work..what about doing a compression test on it ?? your looking for about 170 psi per cylinder plugs out spinning on the starter.

Are you gonna rebuild any way?? cos if u are then go for it, offer them £300 for engine and box.

cheers john,

yeah im thinkin of doing a rebuild in the long run, once i buy my zed next year im not planning on selling it.

compression test sounds like a good idea, whats the easiest way to do one?

im very tempted to offer them 300 and theyll let me take it out, hopefully aquire few other things, has nice set of eibach springs and an aftermarket suspension setup!cheers for replin, nice tt swb manual by the way! exact one im lookin to eventually buy!

if rebuilt the engine could be a spare or perfect one to plonk in mine when i buy it, i primarily want it to gain some experience on the zx engine so im familiar with it when i buy mine.

cheers mate.

ps whats the easiest way to see if the engine turns over even if the electrics of the car might not be workin?

Lol...this ones round the corner from my house so no transport fee's. im not 100% this one is working as i cant trust what the breakers say. but say for example if the turbos had blown or if something went wrong in the engine whilst driving, and thats the reason its being scrapped, will this engine be any good for a rebuild still?

many thanks, been big help!

If you have an engine stand then bolt the engine to it/ put a battery across the starter with the plugs out and push or screwin your pressure guage. Just turn the engine like you were starting the car and you will see the pressure rise on the guage .... 6 times once for each cylinder and thats it ...if the breakers are round the corner then no sweat you can return the engine or re-negotiate the price.

Thanks for your comments on my car, imported it last year have been slowly re-building the suspension.

A spare engine and the knowledge you can gain is well worth it..I would say just make sure the you want to drive the car for a while.

It's a fast gt car, cross continents in speed and comfort.

There are faster track/road cars but its an excellent combination of comfort and speed.

Good luck

thanks again john, thats a big help! will let you kno the outcome of the engine when i buy it.

If the car at the breakers is undamaged bodywork wise, and an import as well, it would have been the subject of mechanical failure, and serious expensive failure to be in a scrap yard, so it could be the engine. If it has suffered accident damage, the chances are that the engine is probably OK. If you want experience of these engines, as Bird said, buy one with known problems as the cost of rebuilding is not cheap. To buy a good one at good money and then strip it seems pointless.
