HELP PLEASE! HELP PLEASE! HELP PLEASE! HELP PLEASE!

Took my Z out yesterday night for a rare drive, got me to the pub fine with no problems. Coming out a couple of hours later as soon as i turned it over it started but tapped very loudly from the engine somewhere. I turned it off and tried again but the same noise carried on. It increased the speed of the tapping with the revs.

As I nursed it home i noticed the oil pressure guage was reading 0 the whole time. This has never read 0 before whilst running.

Have tried it again this morning and still does the same even does it when warm. Theres plenty of oil in there as it has not long had a service. Im too scared to drive it any further now as it really sounds terrible!

Any ideas please guys, im really desperate and rapidly loosing faith in this thing. :headvswal  :headvswal  :(

sounds like a lifter issue, change the oil for a good quality synthetic and hopefully the noise will lessen,it could also be the injectors,0 oil press, can just be a faulty sender there prone to playing up!check for leaks underneath,as this can cause low oil pressure!

oil first then go from there

Could it be oil pump related??? I took the oil cap off whilst the engine was running and there wasnt any oil to be seen???

Looking at the manual diagrams yes it could be oil pump. There is a check for oil pressure by connecting a pressure guage in place of the oil px sender (a crude way of checking it would be to disconnect the sender and see if you get wet).

You dont want to be running it I dont think. Personally I would first check your pump and if thats ok listen to exactly where the noise is from as the oil feed splits to either bank of cylinders and contains check vlvs.

Listen to your engine through a screwdriver, it sounds mad but you can pinpoint noise this way.

as greg said it sounds like a stuck lifter, so check your oil level and make sure theres plenty in

Granted but with the oil px sender failing simultaneously?

I would be cautious and check the pump and take it from there. I know the senders are fragile as my own is intermittent but in this case I think he needs to know if his engine/v expensive turbos are being fed oil.

alot will depend where the noise is comming from its its in the top of the engine then i would put money on lifter but if its lower then yeh more likely the big ends poss from oil pump being knacked :( just hope its the first one bud

Mike

If the oil isnt getting to the lifters then they will make a lot of noise. If the victims feels that the noise is isolated to one lifter or on bank of lifters then he could rule out the pump. Do the big ends not run in the sump of oil on these engines?

the rod bearings do but the main and big end are between crank and block, first bearings to go are more commonly the rod bearings,as there the ones that will starve of oil first!

Checked oil was at right level this morning and its just under full. I've tried to pin point the noise and it does sound like its right at the top of the engine. Gutted as its expected to be on banzai stand at Donny 06 next week. Shall i book it in somewhere or is there something i can do so i can drive it to the show? ? ?

its a difficult one because if its a sticky lifter then it can be moved by giving the car a good revving but if its not and poss something much worse then your only going to do more damage but tbh if you on the lines of having to pull the engine anyway due to a failed oil pump or big ends etc then i would give it a go to see if it frees the lifter up??

do it at your own risk ;)

Shit this is EXACTLY what happened to my last zed and was one of the bearings on the cam had started to wear. Ended up with a siezed cam and blown engine!

Not sure why I had a tapping noise or why it started, but it didnt take long to sieze (25 MILES).

Hope its not the same thing bud. Not a helpfull post but may shed some light?

************OH AND DONT DRIVE IT!!!!!!!!*****************

you said there doesnt seem like there is oil at the top of the engine.have you tried running the engine and pooring some in to it an try and see if the noise decreases or stops. this will help to rule out the lifter prob.

imo waiting for a slating.

I'll try pouring a little oil into it tomorrow then just to see if it quietens it down. Sorry to keep asking stuff but if it does make the noise drop for a bit, is that a good sign??

I think my second plan is to rev it, but really want that to be last resort.

think it will just show you the lifter is ok. i am really suspecting oil pump bud. or it could be that v6 engines really need regular oil changes as they have narrow oilways, you could have a blocked oil feed to the top of the engine.

half the cars on this site dont seem to get enough use. the shit in the lifters will have settled to the bottom and the ball NRV will have probably stuck open, causing them to rattle. same goes for the oil pressure senders.

these cars need to be used regularly, not take out once a year for a gentle drive. thats about 3 posts in 5 mins ive read that have had problems caused by the car sitting.

For my 2p worth,

Things I've found with rattles:

Light tappy sound, not connected to engine speed = noisy injectors.

Light tappy sound changing with engine revs = lifters.

Heavy regular sound = big ends.

Never be happy unless you've got an oil pressure reading. No oil = knackered crank in very few miles (from painful experience).

My zed isn't happy unless it's in a garage being fixed.

Had Z trailered to garage they recon its the oil pump thats gone and has advised changing the engine. Is this right or do you think it will be ok if i get a new oil pump put in??

or do you think it'll be cheaper to break her for bits??

Advise please guys

put a new pump in and try it. as long as you didnt drive it far the engine should be ok.

if it goes boom then you have the other options .

go for the cheapest option first you may well be suprised how strong these engines actually are.

how do they know its the oil pump?what tests have they done,a second opinion might be a worthy trial

good luck mine dose this on ocassions, because i dont use her enough.i drive a cople of miles gently then when warmed up go find a scooby that normally works but problely not for you.
