Hi,

 

Im trying to remove the rear steering rack (for want of a better term)

 

I cant get any movement on the knuckles that fit to the rear axle's short steering arms.

 

They appear to be unusual in that they have a bolt at the rear which holds in place an aluminium cover about the size of £2 coin.

 

Through the opposite side they appear more normal with the tracking end held on with a single bolt to the knuckle and steering arm.

 

I have undone everything and am hammering hard with the correct size joint splitter ( fork type ) but I cannot get the end of the steering arm to separate from the trackrod end.

 

I am trying to fit a Hicas eliminator which as you may know uses the steering rack arms screwed in to each end of the silver alley plate, so I need to get the tracking ends of of the steering arms.

 

Has anyone ever done this before...can you help with some advise.

Get a furkin big hammer and smash the car to bits...NO.NO just kiddin.

 

With a little pressure on the ball joint from the fork, hit the very end of the steering arm. Not on the side but the very end and you should shock the seal formed between steering arm and ball joint tapper. Make sure you have the ball joint nut on still but not done right up, this will stop it flying off and clouting you around the head.

 

Let me know if this works please, like I say I have to do mine shortley.

Does the arm not screw into the eliminator without the ball joint? if so then it should just unscrew from the ball joint shouln't it :confused:

Sorry I couldn't help

You really need to split it where you say bud (no' 2)-I just fitted mine and cracked the tapers the way I always do-lump hammer under to support and another hammer above, this 'shocks' the joint off!-both mine came off in around 2 minutes.

I DONT KNOW IF Im heading for problems but Ive got the rear rack off by unscrewing the track arms from the track rod ends. Ive just had the two track arms off the old rack ready to screw them into the Eliminator beam.

 

Seeing your pics / have you sprayed your beam ?? Only I guess that aluminium will get pretty dam corroded pretty dam quick under the back of the car so Ill paint mine.
