My 91 UK spec TT seems to wiggle every time I hit a bump on the road ie the back of the car seems to lose traction very slightly. This happens in either wet or Dry conditions. Is this down to a HICAS problem ???

Or do all 2+2's to this

My SWB TT never had this complaint

Roy, pull the handbrake up 1 click only! Then drive around, if it stops it it's your shocks are Phuket! Presuming you've still got stock Nelson shocks???

All UK TT's have the hard/soft suspender actuator on the rear shocks. Pulling the handbrake up one click activates them and stiffens your suspension up big time. Does make a noticeable difference as that's how I proved it was mine.

If not then check all the HICAS bushings, oh and tyre pressures can also cause it.

Tyre pressures, knackered shox or HICAS end links.....

Get the tyre pressures checked first.

If the shox really are knackered then there is no chance any change in damping rate (which is what the handbrake trick does) is going to sort it. The best way to test a shock is to bounce the suspected corner of the car - if it goes down and back up then stays there its ok, if it continues to bounce the shock is knackered.

Also, jack the rear wheels and see if there is any play in them - if you can move them in a steering type action then the HICAS end links or actuator are worn.

Hope this helpZ.....

Andy

almost %100 sure that will be your hicas bushes(arms)

jack up the rear and see what play you have in your wheels (left to right)if there is a lot then almost certain it will be your hicas

If it was Track Rods ( Hicas End , Ball joints or whatever you want to call them ) you would get very bad vibrations also usually above 50 - 60mph

Sounds like Shox to me Follow the Wise word of The Muffman to salvation....

In stores this Friday ... Hurry only limited stock remains ;) ...

Yeah, just ignore all that bollocks I told you then mate about the handbrake thing! Was only shown that(and it does stop you crabbing down the road dangerously if your shocks are on the way out!) by a highly respected 300ZX veteran who did know a thing or two! Seeing as he works for Nissan...LMFAO biggrin.gif

Not biggin' up the Nelson Crew but this guy does survive in my good books over certain other Nelson Mandellas...nuff said! wink.gif

got the same problem myself, getting it checked out on monday. Major excessive tire as well at the back, yes timmy mine zx also vibrates at 50-60mph could be the HICAS?

Excessive tyre wear suggests either tracking or end bushes. Check the end bushes and also check the rear wheel alignment...

CheerZ,

Andy

PS Timmy, dampers use oil as their damping medium - if there's no oil in them, it doesn't matter what rate the pistons are set at wink.gif Yes if the shock is on its way out it will have some effect on the damping and the handling of the car..... But not if its completely shagged(ie been doing this for a while) wink.gif

So by clicking up the handbrake by one it stiffens up the rear suspension, so will that give you extra traction off the line on the drag strip?

Marc, the handbrake trick is actually for diagnostics. Its used to check the actuators are working...

The actuators on the rear shocks move to stiff when you floor it - they are controlled by the ecu wink.gif So the answer is not really - cos they're already doing it wink.gif

owwww, damn there goes my idea for drag strip supremacy, I thought coupled that idea with running the rear tyres at about 16 psi would gain me a couple of tenths on 1/4 mile.

Hey does anyone know, if there are slick tyres that would fit the standard alloy rims of the Zed?

YOKOHAMAS turn to slicks as soon as you by them. Had them on me z31 only lasted 4000 miles WTF!!!!

I think my Bro has them on his Alpine, you're not wrong mate! Oh you pay so much for them and a few thousand miles later F1 teams come and buy 'em off ya...LOL biggrin.gif

While we're on the subject of shocks and oil (and no, I'm not going to ask about Timmys fetish for electric sex toys and baby oil) is it possible to refill shocks with oil and reseal them? Does anybody do this sort of thing as the monoshock on my bike has leaked all the oil out and a replacement one is hundreds of pounds + VAT + labour

This sounds like a similar symptom I got one icey morning.

After hitting some black ice and going sideways down a country lane, I corrected up and then the car seemed to wiggle from side to side.

It wasnt a swinging effect, more like a wiggle wiggle styley movement - if you catch ma' drift. I slowed down to around 15mph and then it went.

Any ideas? Hasn't done it for a good month now.

hey timmy I tried the hand brake thing to-night yes it didn't wiggle an inch, nice tight arse, gotta sort out the rear end out

later rob
