Auto Gear box

Right here goes.

As you may have gessed my auto box has gone bang. Im looking into sorting that but my question is what is it that makes the box go bang and what part of the gear box is it that fails.

I ask this because so many boxes go but we dont seem to have a fix for them. has anyone looked into fixing them at a decent price. I know thay are very complicated as i took out the valve unit and checked and cleaned it(it made no difference). I was just wondering if anybody had looked deeper in to this and if there was any reason why those of us with a little knowledge could not repair them.

Hi bud,Theres a small plastic valve which fails in the box causing fluid to escape in into the housing and it overheats..My first box went in spectacular fashion on the M27 at 80mph and destroyed planetary set/torque converter/prop shaft mount/and complete gearsets lol,Cost £2186 to fix inc uprated oil cooler,2nd time recently the plastic valve failed and i had slippage and it also ripped the splines off the final drive so was stuck in the equiv of 3rd all the time £724 to put right this time!!! My advice? get a manual conversion for fraction of the auto box repair..thats my next big mod.....sorry but they are a pain and prone to failing..i take it its a jap auto then?

P.s mine go's to express gearboxes in portsmouth as the local nissan dealer admitted "we wouldnt even know where to start repairing it"!!!!!!!! luckily it has 3 year warranty on it now ..

The usual problem with the Jap auto boxes is overheating as they don't have an oil cooler.

Get one fitted before your repaired box dies again ;)

What sort of mileage did you get from the next box and what kind of HP / mods are you running?

Chris

Well it lasted 1500 miles i spose, not to good really but it wasnt the overheating that failed it this time,I'm running a stock car mate with just some adjustable bovs fitted and exhaust.I dont drive it hard coz its my daily driver so werent that impressed really...deffo going manual tho when i got the cash up for it..

I have a 'spare' auto box complete with torque converter & loom that came out of a Zed that had met a lamppost so assume its ok(never needed to fit it in the end) my problem lay elsewhere.I paid 400 quid for it and Id sell for the same if youre interested.

Oh btw I blew my auto box on the M1 last year and cost me big time to sort out, and that was just for a second hand box and fitment!! ( I thought my recurring running fault was this replacement box at the time hence my purchase of the second box)

Anyway you have my symapathy mate good luck :)

does the car move at all in any gear ?? plus have you checked the strainer/filter as if it is blocked autobox wont function, or is it slipping in gears & also check you tps setting as that can also effect gear changers, i had a similar problem & thought autobox had gone so took it to a specialist who charged me 350 pounds just for a oil change, two weeks later had same problem wouldnt change gears/slipping etc so went back & he insisted that i needed a rebuild which would cost 2000 pounds, so drove home & decided to have a look myself took off the autobox oil pan & strainer/ filter which was covered in debris & blocked & the oil hadnt been changed at all at this point i was very  because the :xxx: auto specialist charged me 350 for f**k all & didnt even touch the box apart from topping the fluid,so after i cleaned the filter & new oil touch wood autobox has been perfect so before you take yours to anyone deffo get a second opinion

Car moves in first and second but slips like a pig wont go any higher. I have changed the oil twice and took off the sump and cleaned the oil strainer and striped and cleaned the valve body. But the main thing is the oil smells like a fire in a chip shop.

I can still smell it on my hands 2 days later. :)

I might have to have a wash now

Ill give ztech a ring. Cheers for the help.
