I got my Zed a couple of weeks ago and the speedo wasn't working, I got some useful advice from some of the guys on here (and Luke at Zcentre) and people said that it was probably the kph/mph converter playing up...

...Today I took the dials off etc (never tinkered with any of my cars before, but feel that I should get used to it!) and I took the converter out and re-connected the speedo wire as it was when it came over from Japan.

It still doesn't budge an inch :headvswal

Apparently, it's now one of two things - either the sensor on the auto box isn't working or the speedo itself is dead. But Zcentre said there isn't any easy way of finding out which.

I think my next step is to get hold of a speedo or whole dial cluster that I can plug in to see if it's the speedo or the sensor on the gearbox...

Incedentally, the speedo did work for a short time at high speed the other day, but then quickly died again. :(

Sorry, lengthy post - but does anyone have any ideas/help on this one??

Hope someone helps you out here, I am having the same problem. Mines a manual. I dont have a convertor so it isnt that. It sometimes works when I am caning it around and occasionaly kicks in to life if I put on the cruise control. Speed sensor?

Cheers, sounds like a similar problem, as mine kicked in twice on the motorway when I was flooring it. Flew up to 110 but as soon as I slowed down it slowly died down to 0 again. If it is the speed sensor then it's a garage job for me - apparently you've got to take most of the exhaust off to get to the thing (not something I would/could do).

Does the speedo on a manual work from a gearbox sensor aswell?

If you remove the speed sensor from the box and run a drill (slowly) on the shaft then connect a DMM to the wires ( leave connected to car wiring)you should see a varying voltage 0-5 volts IIRC.........not sure about removing from auto box.....may leak oil so be careful. Jeff at Zedworld offered me this pearl of wisdom and helped me track my speedo probs to the speedo cluster

hope this helps guys

Too techy for me to try - but nice advice, thanks!

Advice that I may pass on to a mechanic!

Been on to Andy at Japanese Supercar Parts about an Auto box speed sensor from a breaking ZX, he was saying he thought you could remove the sensor on an auto TT without removing any of the exhaust, I've heard other people say otherwise though...

Anyone know how tricky/accessible the sensor on a J-Spec TT auto box is to get to?

the speed sensor at the back of the box is a piece of cake no need to remove the zorst don't know about the other one at the front though!
