I was always told the French make the best diesel engines so any Peugeot Renault Citroen would be my suggestion.

Would a 3 door Peugeot 205 diesel be to small for you? My girlfriends brother is gonna be selling his because he's just got a company car. If your interested and want more details PM me ;)
Peugeot 405 would be a good choice.

405s are going for £50 now. As much as I love budget motoring, I think he's after something a little newer maybe.

Xantias are nice comfy cars and look ok, but their let down is the suspension. When it fails it's not cheap to replace. 406s cut out that bit giving you a car with traditional suspension. They use the same running gear though as the Xantias. The 1.9 diesels are good, but the 2.0 HDis are better. 306s and Citroen ZXs also use the same 1.9TDi units and aren't too bad. Fuel pumps tend to go in the 1.9s and are a pig to replace.

Vectra diesels are pretty poor, but the Vectra is a solid and trusty machine and doesn't tend to go wrong becoming very very cheap now.
