I have Symantec (Norton) anti-virus 2006 at the mo which has been pretty good so far.

Thing is for the last 3 days whilst on the internet I have been getting the message "High risk security alert.............Norton Internet Worm Protection has detected and blocked an intrusion attempt" every 5 minutes.

This is fekking annoying as it interrupts my web-browsing.

OK it's doing it's job but does it have to tell me every 5 minutes, and why oh why is there a fekking worm trying to intrude my PC anyway.

What should I do?

Thanks

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

This could be a couple of things.

Firstly it might be the websites you're looking at have got some nasties embedded in them that try to take advantage of browser vulnerabilities to hijack your PC. Only advice is to be a bit more choosy about what you're looking at.

The other possibility is that you're being scanned by PCs that are part of some botnet and that are looking for a vulnerability to take advantage of to infect your PC. If that's the case then getting a router with builtin firewall should significantly reduce it because if you set it up right (most of) the worms' port scans won't get past your firewall. I've got the full Norton IS 2005 Pro suite (probably have to upgrade again soon) along with a hardware router including a firewall, and this only happens to me very occasionally.

windows has a new one available called windows defender its quite a usefull tool tbh , replaced the old spyware blocker they used , give it a try bud ,

works well with nortons 2006 i have same prog all ok so far

Richard

Are you using AOL as i got a message about aol software and norton causing problems but i deleted the message and cant fookin find it.

Cheers John Crisp

Ok i've got that version, open the icon in system tray, the bottom right hand corner of you screen, (looks like a yellow circle with load of lines going up and down and left to right) when the box opens go to the options button at the top of the screen, click on internet security, then that boxs opens go to firewall, click on that when that screen opens toward the bottom there should be a box that says "stealth blocked ports" then under neath that thereis a circlethat says "permit all except suspected attacks(recommended) make sure that has got a green dot init, and that should be it...................................................................................................................................................................................

or i'm talking total b@@llox :x:

:headvswal

If you're running XP make sure that the firewall is switched on!

I was messing around installing BB for my Mrs' Dad last weekend on a brand new Acer laptop...only to find that the firewall was not activated. ;)

Norton could just be set too high. If you set it too high it will be a right picky tw*t and moan about everyting, a bit like a woman!!!

I found it needed a bit of tuning but you need to know what you are doing TBH.

HTH

I hate norton

My advise is junk Norton completely, its a nightmare on every machine i've had to sort.

Install Spyware S&D (Free) , AVG Antivirus (Free) and Zone Alarm (Free) and you're sorted once you've ran everything :D

I ought to add i hate norton one last time before i finish :D

Bantambunny has it right. Norton is a picky nasty piece of junk IMO. I would use AVG free, microsoft defender, and a hardware firewall(3com are pretty easy for home user). Never get any wanings, not once had virus or spyware, and no configuration after initial setup. Plus its all free(except firewall obv)

micrsoft windows defender really isnt that good, you think you never get spyware because it doesn't find half of the main threats :D

check out the spyware center at http://www.download.com, it'll tell you everything you need to know. i run norton at home and work and if configured properly it works fine, the only known problem i've experienced is it thinking that dreamweaver's FTP process is an attempted intrusion.

AVG is also recommended for those on a budget.

for AV I use AVAST. Also free and very good...

In my experience, Norton slows everything down as per the previous threads in the forum about it....

Norton Sucks!!!! Big time. The amount of problems with Pc's coming here due to Norton is a joke, it takes far to much resources and slows down your PC.

Get it off you PC and put a free AV on it like Angus said.

Norton thrives off the noob market because most ppl think you need Norton as a AV, just the same way the ppl think you need word to write a letter, when Open office is far better and FREE!!!!

Don't know whether anyone else has had this but there's a certain way to remove norton otherwise it won't uninstall and you have to delete it manually in safe mode. blummin thing!

I got it right last time and took it off in one but still took a couple of restarts

It is a PITA. I used to use it because it was convenient and I had the software but it slowed every bloody thing down, generated alerts for no reason and caused me hours of hassle until I could get it to do what I wanted when I wanted it done. In the end I decided, enuf was enuf. Now I have my router etc, I do not see the need for an aftermarket FW and use the built in one, good AV and a bit of CS. (Common Sense...). Since I am also an IT professional I know hgow I like my PC set up so have no issues now...and no fookin Norton...lol

Heh. Is starting to turn into a "I hate Norton" thread. Wonder what the general consensus is? I work in IT, too, and I think it's the most cumbersome nasty thing, and its aimed at end users! weird marketing. :wack:

As an ex-network analyst for ******** bank (just covering my back) i used to see all sorts of problems with it and you think you had troubles with the personal edition, in the corporate versions you had a central update server which spooled out the updates to the clients; 60,000 to be accurate and one worrying thing was after doing an audit i found that the updates hadn't been recieved for over a year!

Quite worrying when you're money's being controlled by people sitting on machines with no virus update on them hmmm

Then again employees also had laptops with timed encryption keys, the ones where its synchronised with a server to let them dial up into the ******** network and bypass the 7 firewalls the company spent millions on to develop.

And guess what happened? They'd leave them on buses/trains/the tube with all their passwords written in books with step by step instructions on how to get on the network.

DOH!

Needless to say i bank with HSBC instead lol

Users....aren't they a dumb lot...PMSL....

There's nothing wrong with the PC luv, the problem is between the mouse and the chair...!!!! LOL
