Hi guys

I'm pretty new to the zed world and am just after a little bit of advice.

I was recently introduced to the 300zx a couple of weeks ago and I was suitably impressed, the car looked/sounded/performed amazingly.

So since then I've been scouring the t'internet looking for the ideal one.....then I came across this site.

I have been reading through the various posts and have become horrified with some of your experiences!!!

Bird, fingers21, badger1, t-pot to name a few.

Altho I am pretty impressed with the amount of advice and help you guys have given your fellow members, but help/advice/support doesn't always help/pay the bill when you've been sold a wreck!!!

I still like the car but would like to know:

a) Is it really worth buying one?

b) How deep do my pockets have to be?

All help/advice would be gratefully received

Hi Buddy

Lots of people have trouble free Zeds - you just don't hear about them on the forum.

A good Zed will be great but I'd still keep some money in reserve in case it goes wrong.

A bad one will be a worthless money pit.

Most (or almost all) of us would say it's worth buying one.

Theres often good ones on sale here. Or if you see one somewhere else get on the site and see if anyone's nearby who can give you advice/come and look it over for you.

Yep make sure you get a good one otherwise they do tend to mercilessly swallow the contents of ones wallet.

Mines a right old cronk by the way and by the time I get it on the road it'll have cost me the same as an entire street in Wales!!

Still happy hunting

PS I'm an angry Elf

Mines a 1990 UK car and I think the only problems have been, are caliper seized and battery needed replacing. Just found a small spot of rust under the bonnet, which is being sorted, apart from that, the thousands I have spent on mine, was just upgrading bits by choice.

Barry

mine has been toruble free since owning it, im replacing the bearings in my gearbox simply because, they are 15 years old, and there is a slight noise and as im a fussy ba5tard im gonna change them and then the clutch.

since owning it , i have had the heater matrix fail but thats common and nothing serious, a bypass sorted that out until a new one is fitted, nothing serious and wont kill the car!!.

changed oil, plus etc at ztech thats about it shes been to yorkshire and back and all over the place and never skipped a beat..

buy one off a forum member and you can look up the posting history about the car and most members will know the car from their area.

it's definitley true that you only read the bad stuff on forums... not many people post in the help and advice section with "there's nothing wrong with my car, just felt left out that I couldn't ask for advice"!! Although there are some threads like that - an attempt to rectify the balance a little!

The 300's like pretty much every other car - neglect it and it'll need fixing, difference being it's a performance car so you pay performance prices! It's not technically difficult to work on yourself, but the engine bay's absolutely crammed full so it is plain difficult to work on if you get my drift!

The worst problem I've had was killing the standard clutch within a month of owning it - replacing was a PITA, but did it myself in a weekend. I think we all get little nocks and noises which we post about - but when you have them on your daily drive/ company car you don't give a shit! It's just because they're "Toys" (and because everyone's scared of turbos going) people get over - anxious about the smallest noise!

Search for a good one, and 'bang for your buck' you'll struggle to do better!

Good luck!

PMSL...

Up until now I've had no major problems with mine, although you do need to be aware that it's a 15 (ish)-year-old car so even with a normal car you'd expect to have to deal with ongoing maintenance. The zed is a bit of a different beast though, and therefore requires a greater degree of TLC (read: cash) to keep it sweet. Just make sure you get a decent one and you'll be fine, although it *will* cost you money to keep it running whatever. Use the buyers guide in the FAQ section when going to view zeds and be very cold blooded about rejecting them if you're even slightly unsure.

The Zed is a fantastic car. If you get one that has not been dogged then it will make you smile day after day. Like any vehicle it must be maintained but keep in mind its a performance vehicle so the maintena cost will be higher than a micra. I alway look at what I have for the money I spent and I just smile as I know the Zed is one of the best kept secrets. The styling of the car along with the engineering make for a wonderful car. I was driving the other day with the wife in the car and she noticed how many people stopped in their tracks as we drove by and she said "This car gets quite alot of attention" to which I replied "Yeah you have to get used to it" So take your time and look at as many as you can before buying one, dont rush into buying any one.

The 300 is a fantastic car, don't let the bad experiences of the minority decide for you.

My best advice is to get someone who knows the car inside out, to check it over for you.

Generaly you get what you pay for with cars and this is true of the zed.

Beware of low mileage imports as they are probably clocked, this goes for all makes and models of car.
