is it ok to fit an n/a gearbox to a swb tt with just the bell housing change??

im going to be having mine rebuilt shortly and i have the chance of a n/a box in the meantime. it would only be on there until the gearbox is finished.

pros and cons please guys

not sure si but think they are the same pretty sure the na had a different rear diff to make the difference in gearing

just read this on tt net

quote " " they are interchangeable. If you are going to use an NA trans on a TT flywheel/clutch, you will need a single 2.5mm washer on the top starter stud between the bell housing and starter itself to get proper clearance.

this right??

Prop spline will definately be different size,,,,,ask Vance.

oh ffs... lol

make ur minds up... will it go on my tt swb while mines being re built or not.. yes or no..

let me know so i can buy allans from him please!!

allan says yes but i need to be sure in my head before i go about the change!

as it means paying a fair whack for either a rebuild or importing a new one from the states or a uk new one.

a brand new tt manual gearbox from the states inc shipping is £1500 and i wont have to pay too much on the importing taric.

the reason is that it would seem the lay shaft bearing may need changing and the input shaft bearing also.. a rebuild is almost 1500 to have done so i may as well get a new one as this gearbox is 15 years old...

the only difference between an n/a and tt manual is the casing.the internal ratios in the manual are the same.the tt box is heavier as the casing is stronger.the splines are the same i beleive.the boxes do not have a removable bell housing.the front casing is one peice.hope this helps.

they must have a removeable bell housing otherwise conversions would not be possible...

right i have decided, gonna replace the input shaft bearing and empty box and refill with redline. if that doesnt solve it i may buy agruntpas while its being refurbed, that or i spend 1500 on a new one from the states.

so i hope its the fookin bearing.

Box is 3 sections and the bell housing is the first from the fly.

i rebuild gear boxes for a living.the bell housing as you quote is the front casing.a bell housing is what it says.old ford boxes had a bell housing which could be removed without disturbing the input shaft or layshaft.this is called a bath tub style box.a zed box front casing carries the races for the layshaft and the the input shaft.

ok, last question, can i replace the input shaft bearing and the lay shaft bearings?? or does it need to be done by a specialist?

I converted my TT from an auto to a manual with a n/a box.

All you have to do is gring out a few mm from the inside of the opening where the starter is mounted to give enough clearence for the flywheek. (the TT boxes have a little indentation there.)

Stick two large washers between the starter and the bellhousing when mounting it and voila!

I only swapped out the front section of my prop and got it balanced. A good idea to do the U/J at the same time, just to be sure.

Hope this helps.

Ben.
