NZR - Laptop networking.... Please HELP!!

As above :(

Right I set up a home wireless network the other week, but the WiFi to my laptop kept dropping out (loosing signal) even when right next to the router!!

First let me tell you what I have...

The router/modem was pyrchased brand new as I'd got rid of AOL and wanted a proper broadband modem. It was then hard-wired to the main PC, this works no problem. Then I bought the laptop and decided I wanted to buy a wireless card for it. Now I just happened to stumble upon a matching card on e-bay (stated as un-tested) so I bid on it and won for a dirt-cheap price ;) I received it and installed it on the laptop, and it seemed to work OK. But now the fun started.....

After a few days (I didn't use it all that much) the signal started to drop out, it would even drop out right next to the router

So, in short I got a new card (thinking it was the un-tested cheap one at fault) I installed that yeaterday and it started doing exactly the same thing!!

So, useing my powers of deductive reasoning ;) , I decided it must be the router playing up. Today I bought a new router and installed it, spent most of the morning configuring it up (my fault ;) ) and then spent most of the afternoon trying to sort out my next problem, which is......

On the laptop the connection icon is green, with an excellent signal strength of 125Mbs, but the only problem is that Internet Explorer wont connect to anything (including the router set-up screen)!!! It was working before, what have I done wrong? Or missed out? Or fooked up?

Please help, as this is really p1551ng me off big time :(

Sorry for the long-winded explanation.

Dave

Can you get to the router ok? Usually http://192.168.2.1

If you can then the issue is likely IE config. IE still thinks you are using old connection. I assume you have rebooted the router, got a new IP address from it and rebooted the PC?

Thanks for the reply....

No, can not get to the router either, although the network card has a connection. Done all the re-boots etc.

The problem seem to be with the link from IE to the network software on the laptop. I'm stumped, I've made sure that all of the settings within the Tools > Internet Options menu are the same on both the laptop and the PC, but still nothing.

give me a call tomorrow on 08452260229 i will help you get it working

Is it a secured network? ie have you put inthe key that allows you to acces the router?

I just got the wanadoo live box, and took me a while to get it sorted out, as i wasnt using the wireless kit that came with itlaptop is wireless enabled. as you have i've got the pc hard wired to the router, and useing the laptop wireless. i also have another RJ45 cable so when i'm down loading large files it goes through the network rather than conecting to the internet wirelessly, which is a hell of a lot quicker. dont know if yours is the same but i had to go into the boxes soft ware menu and disable the on board firewall, then if you can connect you have prob entered the key incorecctly, as i did!! if you get stuff, give me a ring on 07737394171,

Neil

I am assuming then that if you set up MAC address filtering and WEP that you have added the same settings etc?

can you get into the router using the LAN connection? you should be able to.

if you can, but you can't through wireless, then it is more than likely your IP address not being assigned by the DHCP server in your router. try typing

ipconfig /reset

in your command prompt. if that doesnt work then try manually assigning an IP address and DNS in your TCP/IP properties for that particular network connection.

if these don't work then give the router people a call!

and if its linksys, don't expect it to work either way :D i have a linksys WRG54GS (i tihnk), and it is shit! im going for the buffalo high power router soon, best one out at the mo imo.

IPCONFIG /reset will not work. You need to type IPCONFIG /RENEW.

If you can get in using a cable then the issue is likely to be either WEP key not entered, or is entered but not needed. If you cannot get in either way, then I suggest setting the factory defaults on the router (hard reset) and trying again.

PM me for advice mate.

oops sorry, my bad. alot on my mind :) yes, /renew is what you need!

...For all your help/offers of help guys

I uninstalled the network card today and re-installed it (started from scratch) followed the instructions, and 'Hay, Presto' I have internet connection working properly. But as soon as I try to secure the network, by following all the correct instructions, making sure that the code key is the same on both Router and Laptop, it no longer works :headvswal

So fook it, I've wasted far too much time prating around with this, it's totally done my head in, I give up, so I'm leaving it unsecured.

Why the fook can't you just buy something, take it out of the box and it bloody works as it should do??

PS - Before anyone asks, I've gone through everything that everyone has sugested to me, and nothing worked! But I do really appreciate all the help that you all gave. But to be honest, it really isn't worth all this hassle, and like I've said, I've wasted too much time on it.

Oh, incidently, if I connect my mobile up to the laptop, and use the phones software to connect via GPRS, everything worked fine!

Again, THANKS

have been down the same road, heres what you need to do...

go into the control panel, admin tools, services

go down to Wireless Zero Configuration and stop the service, then disable it.

now go to the software utility that runs the card and make the network connection again that way instead of using the windows settings.
