Hi people, I found out yesterday that I have slack in the UJ in the picture attached. How much would one of these cost and either get replaced or replace myself. Could there be anything else amiss ?

Also, some time ago I replaced the shox with good stock second hand ones and now, after some time of them being fitted, I'm getting some clunking sounds from both sides but more on the drivers side. The sound is difficult to explain but it soulds like the thread of a bolt rubbing against some metal ! I have had a 'quick' visual inspection and all bolts/nuts appear tight. What I didn't do was refit the small orange gaskets on top of the front struts as they were both sh4gged !

Oh yes, I have also replaced the tension rods with poly bushes already fitted if that makes any difference

Any ideas please ?

UJ is easy to do,cant remember the cost but heres what ya do,

Slacken off 2 steering colum retaining bolts(lower part under dash area),undo the two bolts on UJ,pull colum up a little, then tap up UJ on uper spline till it free from lower one then take off.Take care not to move steering system/twist colum as you need it to line up as same as when you took it off(lower spline and top spline to line up with splined area on UJ)Dont forget to push colum back.

Tony :)

that noise is quite common, and is usually Tension bushes which are gell filled, and when they fail the liquid leaks out and you get the creaking/grinding noise, or it will be one of the other suspension bushes.

Paul,do you have Rose Jointed tension rods,if so they do this especially in cold weather, what you need to do is spray on silicone release spray or in my case spray grease, worked a treat.

CheerZ Tony, is this a common problem on the Z, my steering as all over the shop and i'm constantly correcting just to go straight, tramlining quite badly. Sometimes have to hold the wheel left or right just to go straight :headvswal

How much play is acceptable or should it be none.

Also, where would I get the UJ from, Nissan main stealer ?

There should be no play, when i took mine off there was loads of play in knuckle, none at all on new one.

Give Mike a ring intrader section(MJP)he will send you one out by tommoro if in stock,Tony

Is that what is called Tony 'Steering Knuckle' or UJ ?

BTW, was your Z all over the shop before you changed it ?

Power steering to steering colum UJ would say,Mike will know what ya want.

Paul IIRC nissan ones are about £120 !!!

Its sods law , there was one on ebay last week and i don.t think it sold , looked nearly new as well :headvswal :headvswal

I got one off a breaker on here , about £20 and there dead easy to fit but much easier if you,ve got access to a car lift .

there not cheap but not worth buying 2nd hand either

new is around £110 and as said simple enough to fit spray some wd40 or lube all over the joint and spline before you remove and refit makes life alot easier
