Just a quick question. I have a friend who buys cars that have been written of by the insurance companies. he gets them really really cheap, fixes them up and sells them on.

I just wanted to know from you guys if its worth buying off him. I`m led to believe that there are more and more cat d cars on the road now!

what do you think!

I do the same thing and nowadays insurance companies write cars off for nothing. just ask to see a picture of the damage before it was repaired and decide for yourself.

A few examples of mine are.1) Z just needed front and back bumper and a bit of body love (legrath did it himself) 2) Escort GTI on a P just needed a door 3) Clio on M just needed a front bumper and indicator.

are there any insurance problems with getting a cat d and can you stick private plates on them!

I once bought a Cat D Cavalier Diplomat off a copper. All that had been wrong with it was the interior and alloys had been taken. New alloys+tyres, new leather interior and the car was as good as new. Ran it for 2 years and sold it for just about what I paid for it :D

The only difference now is you have to get a VIC test from your local VOSA agent. Had a few done now. It costs £38 and takes about half hour. Then ur mot and your back on the road.

not for a cat d you don't m8, no vic check needed;)

depends where you buy them m8

ie people often get the right to retain their own car so keep the log book

even if not, you just apply to dvla and no questions asked

you usually find its older cars that are cat A B C as they are not economical for the insurer's, my mate has recently rebuilt a galaxy that was wiped out front end, but was still only cat D because of the value

rebuilt and never went near dvla;)
