A motorist drove for 60 miles at speeds of 135mph after the accelerator on his BMW car jammed and his brakes failed.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/4796264.stm

Surely you could slow it down with the brakes or handbrake or turn the engine off before you got doing 135mph in a 1.8 automatic?!?!

Does an R reg 318 auto even do 135mph?

that could be true, if it is, he must have been shitting himself

says in the paper that he used the brakes to keep down to 70mph but they burned out after a few miles. He didnt want to turn the ignition off because of the power steering.

I think i would have still turned the engine off rather then end up crashing like he did though.

He is a numpty. He started on the motorway so even without power steering he could have pulled up straight. He has probably got one of them attention seeking deficite problems, i.e. wants to be noticed. Why coundn't he just put it in neutral or just kept the brakes on til it stopped.

"He tried to put the car into neutral but the gears were jammed. "

i have had a jag stuck in high revs when the kickdown cable jammed, i managed to get it to a standstil by STANDING on the brakes lol, then just switching off as it slowed, mine was in a country road with loads of bends :headvswal so reckon would be far easier to control on the motorway

but deffo not a nice experience

If the accelerator jammed wide open you'd still be able to put it in neutral and turn the engine off wouldn't you?

On a motorway you wouldn't need the power steering and better you slide along a crash barrier than go over a roundabout LOL

For the throttle AND gears to jam I'd have thought you'd have to have 2 separate faults...

Will be interesting to see what the report on the car says LOL

Would you really think of calling the AA and police at a time like that?

Seem to remember a guy reporting a "runaway" truck and it being on one of those traffic police programs.

Turned out he was pulling a stunt to get on the news...

I'd have just stamped on the brakes, slowed it, used the handbrake if necessary and turned the engine off!

its all this fancy fly by wire bussines instead of good old cables, still sounds like a tosspot to me though

It is true

where the Twat crashed is about 3 miles from my house

local paper is full of it, with a photo of the stupid coont.

SHOULD BE BANNED FOR LIFE

This guy has just been on the telly news saying how he wept with fear as he overetook cars at 115mph on the hard shoulder because they wouldn't get out of his way!

Must have been ok tho cos he was in contact with the police all the time on his hands free mobile phone. good job it was h-f or he may have got a ticket.

Why didnt he turn the ignition off if he had the time to phone the fookin AA and the police the twat could have turned the key to ACC and let it roll to a stop? The gears were never jammed he just forgot to push the button I bet.

Still at least he is safe............. :xxx:

Sounds a bit odd that.

Mind you, do you remember the problems Ford had with their cruise control in America? It had a very occasionaly tendancy to engage without driver input and floor the throttle- because it hadn't been activated by a normal route, the logic to disengage it wouldn't work, and IIRC a few people died in the resulting accidents... The only way around it was to turn off the ignition, then turn it back on.

Mind you in those cases a chunky V8 could well burn out the brakes- not sure about a 1.8 in this case...

dick head thats all i have to say, same thing happened to me in my old 24v modeo ,kill the engine with the key turn it back on job done

Guess none of you have been in this situation.

1stly I feel for teh poor bugger as everyone will be saying he should of switched it off.

But then you try doing it and steering, never mind the breaks, you wont be able to steer as the steering lock comes on, if you turn the switch parcialy off it allows the engin to carry on.

How do I know, I had a ZED jam on me, look back and your see the posts, and when I turned the engine off the steering lock came on. You want to know the feeling of fear, now this poor bugger had a naffed up box, which is confirmed by teh police.

now give the fella some credit for not killing anyone.

steering lock should not come on unless you remove the key, if it does then theres something wrong.

I reckon he was on his way to a football match and got pissed up b4 he left and forgot how to drive.

I was driving a 2.0 Renault years ago up a hill on a dual carriageway and as I went over the hill and started to come down the other side which was very steep I took my foot off the gas and found the pedal stuck to the floor.

Throttle cable had jammed and i couldn't pull it back up and was doing about 80 ish.

Turned it off and back on to ACC so the steering didn't lock and put it in neutral and slowed down with the brakes - yes it's harder to drive with no PAS or brake servo but cars are still driveable when these fail or they wouldn't be allowed, especially on a straight road!

If he couldn't put the auto in neutral (which I find hard to beleive when he's also got a jammed throttle) then turning it off is the obvious thought - either that or accelerate to warp speed and call your mates, AA, police etc for a final chat  :xxx:

Must admit the steering on a Z is a "little" heavy without PAS though

It is obvious to us what to do but if you were a computer dude who just drove back and forth to work and knew nothing about cars you would panic. I know its hard to believe but there are some blokes with the CARNAL knowledge of a women LOL

Here here, W#NKERS the lot of em. HA HA HA

He should be banned for life the Twat :slap:

he could have killed someone just for not turning off the ignition

Thats a awsome looking RS2000 in your sig jasey300zx

  • 1 month later...

I had the throttle jam on on a customers 4.0 V8 TVR I was delivering back at a junction once. Turned it off put it reverse, turned it back on, dumped the clutch and turned it back off again and rolled back onto a driveway.

Ivan

At least he had enough sense to get into the hard shoulder. Never had a throttle stick but have had break failurer not nice. I would be in 2 minds to turn off ignition with power steering I know what it like trying to steer when the power steering suddenly goes Bloody awfuly in a large car like the Rover 820 I was driving at the time. But you never know untill you're in that position. Some people don't know enough and some go into overdrive while others lose it.

Well... it's easy to say what he should/shouldn't have done. But fair play to the guy: he didn't hit anyone else, and no-one was injured (apart from a few scratches on him).

Mind you, that's another very good reason I wouldn't touch an auto if given the choice (sorry). With a manual you can just pop it into neutral, and if *that* doesn't work all you've got to do is depress the clutch and you've cut off all power transfer to the wheels.... OK, so the engine will then rev until it blows itself to smithereens, but who cares? The main thing is to walk away from it. Only problem is you mind find yourself in a situation where you don't have time to react because you don't realise what's happened until too late. :-S
