Evening everyone, when I want to put my car into gear (NA automatic) I should have to put my foot on the brake press the button on the shifter in and move the stick. Now when I put my foot on the brake I cant always get the button to press in, secondly, that doesnt cause a problem as I can move the stick without pressing the button in anyway, I am sure its not meant to be like that and I am now thinking what if I am driving along and someone in the passenger seat leans across and knocks it into neutral or worse reverse?? I guess there is a switch by the brake pedal thats not working re the button not going in but what about being able to move it anyway? am I going mad did it always do that? its late and im confused

You should be parked before getting passengers to do any leaning over of that nature ;)

I cant help Im afraid, other than I believe the gearbox ecu wont go into reverse unless car is stationary, even although the lever can be moved to reverse.

nope your right dude it is not meant to go into gear intill you put your foot on the brake or press the little button in on the back of the shifter then you can press the button on the side to change

you can shift from D to N and back without needing to press the button but you need to press the button to go into R or 2 or 1 or P. Pretty sure that's correct. I'll check if I drive the z tomorrow.

I can select N, D and 2 without pressing the button or the brake. When i start the car, i have to press the brake and button to move it from park, but other than that! It won't go from 2 to 1 without pressing the button as a engine break safety measure, but will go from 1 through to drive without pressing the button!

that's it, i knew i was close lol

Richard - I had the same with my red one and it turned out to be the solenoid device that prevents you from removing the key that was failing. Eventually you couldn't remove the key so I had to tie the solenoid open with wire (easy to do) but from then on you could place the gearlever wherever you wanted whenever you wanted. Mind you I never tried kicking it into reverse whilst travelling at speed...

Good luck
