ECU diagnostic help required please

OK as some of you know I am stuck on safety boost.

Using the TTZD page following an ECU diagnostic I found that I had to do the following:

Trouble Code: Detected Items: Malfunction Caused By: Check::

Trouble Code:13

Detected Items: Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor

Malfunction Caused By: The Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor circuit is open or shorted (abnormally high or low voltage is registered).

Check: Harness and connector, Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor

Trouble Code:21

Detected Items: Ignition signal circuit

Malfunction Caused By: The ignition signal in the primary circuit is not entered during engine cranking or running

Check: Harness and connector, Power Transistor Unit

My questions is, what does it mean by harness and connector? Is it the connection onto the ECU?

Also where can I find the engine coolant temp sensor?

TIA,

Dave G

The harness from the PTU mounted on the left front camshaft belt cover (looking with the bonnet open) goes across the front of the engine to the CAS unit on the right hand camshaft belt cover. There are connectors each end which probably require cleaning up to ensure a good connection is made with each component. In the middle of this loom, you will also see a unit screwed into the block with a connector on it, not integral with the above loom but seperate. This is the coolant temp sensor. Once again I would clean this connector up before considering replacing the sensor.

Thanks guys, at least I have my starting place. I hope it is just dirty connections, its my favourite fix, FREE!!!

coolant sensor is the yellow one on top of the coolant pipe beside the radiator. its normally all green in there, althoug when it goes open circuit, the electric fan normaly comes on. but it could still just be a dodgy connection.

i thought the one on the block was for the gauge?!

**** it, check them both just for the crack

and as mentioned, the code 21 is most likely the CAS connector. although im surprised the engine ran with a fault like that.

It appears to run perfect apart from no boost above 7 psi.

Thanks for the advise Fraser. I work at Dounreay, Thurso and live in Dundee so I could take a detour home someday and meet up.
