Starter motor question

I noticed that the motor has one wire connected to it. I take it this is the power. So would this mean that when you fix the thing to the side of the gearbox? that, that is where it gets it's grounding from?

Just asking this because I was trying to yank the ******* of the one that is connected on there but couldnt take it off so I thought I'll connect the new one without bolting it up. Of course the car didnt turn over though. So is it because of this?

Yes the grounding for the starter motor will be coming from your gearbox/ engine.. the main cable on the back is the Positive and the small wire will be the live from ignition switch to activate the solenoid
