Hi all

Right I'm looking for idea's here!! Info the car is a UK TT 1990 the owner is a new member on here "Bob from Tealing, Scotland" He bought the car with smoking turbo's and poor running (Put down to the turbo prob) about 18months ago, He then had new turbo's fitted this stopped the car from smoking but it still run's like a Fiat Panda. The bloke that fitted the turbo's lost interest and the car lay for 6month. Anyway the car run's like it's really badly retarded starts and idle's fine but couldn't pull skin off a rice pudding. Turbo's appear to spool up but the car just doesn't pull at all boost gauge doesn't work so guessing. I've listed below whats been checked any other idea's welcome.

ECU - show's no faults, not checked on Consult as dono anyone up here with one.

Fires on all 6 cylinders

Compression tested - within limits on all

AFM - connected / disconected engine does what it's supposed to

Timing belt - all pully's line up to marks

Car fueling ok - replaced fuel filter pressure tested

General wiring inspection - everything appears to be ok had on the ramp and check under car as well.

No exhaust leaks

Thanks

Craig

Have you checked the wastegate solenoids?

know as I was typing this first post I was just thinking that same thing ..

If the car has been laid up, what about the air filters, could they be restricting the air going into the engine, could this be the cause of the turbo's failing, I have seen turbo's failing on commercials due to restricted air intake's/filters, the turbo is trying to compress air and its restricted so it actually sooks oil past the turbo seals and causes it to fail.....maybee a lot of mince as its more relating to truck turbo's but a turbo is a turbo.

Maybee worthwhile checking the filters or removing the intake hose to eliminate the air filters.

As I said maybee a lot of mince but if the basics aint there it wont go worth a monkies.

Filter's removed and binned .. It's more like an electrical problem to me car starts and runs fine just goes like a wheelie bin :headvswal

Onist ?? .. So what you tried mate ?? .. this motor's driving me daft .. as the body shell's a belter car's only got 80K on it ..

Craig

Ahh well worth a try........could it be clogged intercoolers with the oil passing the turbo's seals into the intercoolers then solidifying through time if the cars been laid up....seen that before, again restricting the air.

Electrical then its gotta be Conzult to see whats happening.

took me 18 months to sort my boost leaks, finally sorted by paul at sw zeds :) keep hitting the friggin limiter on my boost controller on cold nights now lol.

ha, just about everything,

its been on a datascan too, putting a boost gauge on tomorrow so at least ill know if its boosting or not.

also going to change the coilpacks tomorrow too so fingers crossed like mate.

in fact there isn't much that hasn't been changed on my car lol :x:

Yep it's such a bummer as my car lay for 3 years, bit a fiddling and runs great. Boost controller is what you need mate.. Proper one Apex or somit

Well the ECU has been off and back on to see if there was and funny smelling bits inside. It reports no faults on the flashing LED,

Thanks for the idea's more welcome!!

what boost are you getting!

check the intercoolers for damage!leaks

check that when the engine was pulled, that the intercooler hoses were done up properly

Out of my depth as I run an NA, but I've run turbo cars for years prior to the Z, and it sound like a split hose that carries the boosted air from the turbo(s) to the intake manifold.

Sorry about the lack of real knowledge - the theory's fine.

Good luck

Hi Greg

Not had a chance ta fit a boost gauge yet the stock unit's not working "But thats surprising" The car does make a hell of a blowing sound when the tubs spool up .. I wonder if the coolers are stuffed ?? Engines just about been taken out and refitted by myself so all the hoses are tight and leak proof..

Thanks

Craig

Are you in a garage with a compressor, would it be possible with a pressure restrictor to pressurise the intake with minimal pressure like the car is fully boosting then you would be able to see or hear where the air is leaking.
