its is still an astra but the guy is an astra mk2 nut, he loves them so for him its a great car.

No fair play to him!Just my honest opinion thats all. When ihad my Mk1 Escort a few years back i thought they were the mutz.Since having Skylines and now the Zed i fallen in love with the Jap cars.

Tastes and opinions can change and I can see myself in a Mk2 rally prepped Escy again in the future!

personally i admire ANYONE who as the conviction to make their car into what they want it to be... i've been in a CORSA with a 350bhp turbo lump in it, paperwork to prove it, and it would have MURDERED almost all the cars i'e ever been in, but like all good things it was flawed, it still had drum brakes and torque steered like a bitch,.. lol.

my point is, we shouldnt be so blinkered as to be blind to just what some of these guys have achieved with these cars, massive feats of engineering and months if not years of hard work... they have my respect all day long, whether they have a astra or a R34 makes no difference to me really, its whats been put into it that counts...

last years TOTB was a prime example, the killer car of the day was an old beat up granada (the shitty greeny goldy coloured one) with the V8 in it... far more impressive then all the scoobies and skylines to me...

Impressively modified. Although would'nt destory most zed's on here. Most zed's being 350'ish fly(with basic mods) would still be quicker than a 260hp fwd astra.

Couldnt agree more,

Fair play if thats what people want to do, when you like a car that much it almost becomes odsessive to make it the best you can. People seem to overlook the fact that they could buy a decent car for far less investment!

I've been there, I bet I aint the only one either! Luclkily I moved out of that stage when I was 20 and bought a proper fooking fast car!

FWD with that much power is just total shite which is why most over powered shopping cars end up being written off. There are rare acceptions though!

I was the same between 17 and 19. First car Vauxhall Nova (I know, i know, never again) bought for £400 and it was pretty much a shed. Spent £3000 on it and sold it for £12 to my scrappy. A few cars later I bought a Fiat Bravo for £4k, spent another £8k on doing it up, dont get me wrong I never heard one bad comment about it. But when I look back it has to be one of the most pointless things I have ever done. In the end I sold it for £3200 after only a year and a bit of ownership.

Back to the point, if you guys are trying to say it all comes down to spending less for a better car then you will end up on the jap route everytime (My past 3 were Japs). But its all down to personal opinions, people like different cars for different reasons, I know I wouldnt go out and buy a MK2 astra or anything like that. But I know one guy who has changed his mind from buying a £16k M5 5.0 to looking for an Astra GTE instead simply because he loved them when they just came out and always wanted one. He also asked me, "Dave, what do you think I should do to make my car faster (Vectra 2.2 SRi), cams, pistons or that?" My reply was "sell it!!!, Buy a 300zx for the mods you are planning of doing and get a much quicker car without the effort".

Plenty of moaners and sole opinionated people on there.

fair play to the guy I say!! yeah the car may only be an Astra but im sure the owner likes it.

Of course the thing aint going to be to our taste - thats why we all drive zeds LOL!

I remember years ago my mate had an old Hillman Super Minx estate. he dropped a Holbay lump in it & used to embarrass owners of all the hot hatches at the time - funny as fook!! :D

Hey everyone, nice to see some mixed views on my Astra :) . I can gather its not to everyones taste, but Im a mk2 astra nut, much like you guys are with your Zed's so each to their own. The post on bristol-cruise was not to boast, but was in reply to a "Spotted" thread on a lads car thats just had an engine transplant. The guy in the Zed laughed when we pulled up, hence my comment. It was definitely a turbo'd version as it had pod quages up the A pillar. In reply to the "when hell freezes over" etc comments, I can assure you that the car can put the power down surprising well with decent tyres/tyre pressure and the suspension set up properly. Also, in reply to spending money on a lost cause, this car has cost me around £3k, which I will be able to get pretty much all in return, as its a Champion Limited Edition car with recaro leather etc.

To be perfectly honest, my opinion is that I have a car running on a little over standard boost that can outrun 350BHP Supras fairly easy and THATS what makes my car fun :) . I may not "get the looks" as someone here said but thats the whole point of this car. Its like loving a fat bird ... as long as you love her, who cares? :D

But it's a Vauxhall...I used to have one of these and I hated it...

IMO having one of these is like taking a fat bird to a dance...it may be fun but when you turn up all your mates laugh at you...

:D

Must be rare as fook by now, my mate had one years ago. Very nice motor.

As already mentioned, each to there own! thats what makes it an interesting world.

Full respect to you for building what you wanted! T

i agree with you mate each to there own as long as your happy thats what matters, even if you get peeps saying its only a vauxhall who cares i suppose people will say things like that no matter what you drive. its what you have achieved with your astra, i can imagine the look on peoples faces when you surprise/ show them what your car is capable of . there was a guy who spent approx £50 grand on a R5 TURBO red one it had two engines & approx 500hp in total this was in maxpower about 2 years ago it was faster then a limited edition lambo, escort cosworth, 200 sx & couple others which were all modifed

so the point is he could have bought any car but he choose to do something different.

IMO having one of these is like taking a fat bird to a dance...it may be fun but when you turn up all your mates laugh at you...

LOL, Touche matey. Im not here for arguments thanks. YES its a Vaux, but its a car capable of 300 BHP on standard internals. Add an LSD, boost controller and 600 kilo's less weight trying to thrown me off of every corner and I have a car that I can have a lot of fun with.

Im a great fan of the Zed's and when it comes time to go Jap it will be one of the cars I consider.

Dont take offence mate, I had one of these and I hated it. The handling was terrible, infact they were almost as legendary as a Ford Capri for poor handling. The only good thing I found was the bodywork was solid...

fairplay,id love a car like that that just to be up against some flashy coont in a new m3 csl and say tada at the lights

good points all round. If people want to spend their time and money on something let em, As long as their happy . For example I was up Norris Designs today and he is sorting out a VW lupo which now has a audi TT lump in it , Cost the bloke a fortune but he is dead chuffed. Not to my taste but who cares.

.................. I may not "get the looks" as someone here said but thats the whole point of this car. Its like loving a fat bird ... as long as you love her, who cares? :D

Fair play mate!

I had a then-new GTE back in 1988 at the tender age of 18. Didn't last me long though; some RS Turbo-driving dope forced me into the forest to avoid a head on

The Mk2 Astra had the "Pregnant Roller-skate" look back then but was still way better that anything Ford could offer and there are very few good examples left now. Always loved that "Knightrider" dash too

Some may slag off Vauxhalls but before I caught the Jap bug in 1993, that's all I ever owned and they make some pretty decent engines.

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Fair play to you sipo for building that car. For me it would be about the look on peoples faces that have a "superior" make or model when you destroy them with a Astra, I can imagine you have killed a few top spec cars.

I can't understand why people run down the Vaxhaull brand when we drive Nissans? A brand which most people associate with the Micra!

Disagree...Nissan may make the Micra but have been reknowned for making that best engines for years, something Vauxhall have never been able to claim.

I have a Vauxhall as my daily drive, have had a couple of other includng the same Astra s mentioned above and I hate them. I only use them because they are cheap and I go my present one fo nothing...

Because Vauxhall historically make mainstream crap, dull cheap plasticky cars ?

While Nissan Make a range of successfull sports cars, such as

- the Z-car range - The Best selling/most successful sports car range in the world, fact !

- The skyline GTR, the Nurburgriing record lap holder for many years

- The R390 one of the most expensive cars ever made

- plus a very long time-line of Motor Racing heritage, including Le mans victories.

...and they also make many of the most reliable cars in the world.

Just a guess ;)

Of course we all know this is true, but the general public don't. When I ever talk about Nissan to people they take the mick! Nissan does not have a great image in the general public I think, and is accociated with lesser cars. But we all know differant. The Skyline has improved Nissan's image of late because that is the car the public seem to recognise. IMO.

and its what every chav shouts to his mates when u drive by in anything modified that isnt a hatchback! "fvck me bruv thats a skyline!"

lol lads, agreed on the "vauxhall front", other than the GTE the only other vauxhall I really like is the Lotus Carlton and tbh thats only due to the "Lotus" side of things.

To clear it up so I am not taking undue credit, I did not carry out the engine transplant. I reshelled a GTE 16v ready for the conversion, but this one came up for a silly amount cheaper than what it would cost me so I bought it.

I'll stop spamming your thread now ... maybe see you all in a few years when I go Jap :)

Simon

Te zed is one - if not THE MOST unreliable jap sports car ever sold. I know hundreds of ppl with tuned jap metal - and nothing, i mean NOTHING breaks down like a Zed.

Zeds look and sound the shizzle, but engine wise - nissan got it all wrong. Hence the RB26 - straight six, two turbos - strong as an ox. V6, two turbos - tow truck

I love zeds, but i wouldnt in a million years say they were reliable - unless you are one of those people who never see over 30 miles a month, never see rain, never go over 70 (unless its for like 5 seconds), never go on track, and generaly never have sex - then it will be as reliable as fook

hehe

Now flame me - but you all know im right

Who cares if its an VXHL or a saab - if it has turbos its tunable, and if its tunable - then it can be made FAST.

Thats what matters to some
