COSSIE POWER

Not having experienced Cossie ownership - there is something that I would like to know.

Would a 500BHP Z be faster/quicker than a 500BHP 4x4 Saph' Cossie?

I know there are different things to consider like gear ratios and power curves but at what level of would a Z need to be upgraded to, to level the straight line performance of a 2.4 500BHP 4x4 Cossie running around 35PSI?

Has anyone had experience with Cossies that can offer some comparison?

well for starters thew saph will be alot lighter than the zed. the 2wd saph was actually lighter than the escort cos and faster (marginally) than the 4x4 saph. my money would be on the cos.

LMFAO biggrin.gif

Cos mate, I think and honestly don't doubt that a 500bhp Cossie would cain a Z over a 1/4...one of the best Soups got mullered at TRAX by a nastey tuned Cossie!!! 4x4 will always get the power down better aswell.

But get that Cossie beast to about 150 and(provided you're de-restricted) the Z would say Zeeee ya later phat boyyyyyy!!! biggrin.gif

Actully the 2WD Sierra says 0-60 in 5.2.

Take somthing else into account. Look at autorader and look at how many Cossies say

"300bhp only 5,000 (or what ever) on new engine.

Other words, it keeps blowing

tuned 3 litre V6 is gonna give more torque than a tuned 2.4 4 cyl. And on the road that's wot it's all about..

Thanks for your comments guys.

I'm in no doubt that 4x4 has an amazing ability to just stick and go. However, mid range acceleration is what I'm talking about.

Provided the traction is there, a 2 wheel drive cossie is going to be quicker the equivelant 4x4, or so I'm lead to believe.

So, would a 450BHP Z be close to 500BHP behaviour or am I still well off?

dont worry COS , we own Zed's biggrin.gif

beats a ford any day of the week just with build quality!

Had the 3 door cossie many years ago,and you are 100% correct you can't compare the build quality,IHHO! you can't compare the build quality of a Ford to any Jap car.

I had a bit of a head to head with a friends 270bhp cossie in the Z, it was on the motorway from 60 up and the Z pulled so far ahead so fast it wasn't even close smile.gif

Standard Cossie power is pants, had a race a few years ago in my modded z31, and from 100mph left him for dust. But I've seen a very quick black 2wd cossie up at the pod with 500 bhp doing 1/4 miles in the low 12s.

Shit forget the cossie, I've seen a beatup mkII cortina with a cossie lump do high 11s!!

Getting beaten by that would be very embarrassing

Jeremy Carkson who loves the Cossie escort had one on his last video, ony to show that even with its 4x4 how 'slow' it was in comparison with cars like TVR and lotus - it was embarrassing to see how slow it was. It broke my kids heart to see the car he was in awe of get a good kicking.

Mark

I know of a black 500BHP Cossie, this was capable of about 160 MPH, and was 2 wheel drive.

I dont think the Z would have a problem, because the turbo lag to get that kind of power is unbelieveable in a cossie. It really is nothing then everything, it use to come in about 4000rpm, and be spent by 5500.

Get a dry day, and against the 4wd with the extra drag of the 4wd system and the Z will beat it.

i had and would have another 4 by 4 sapp cossie and off the mark and on the twisty stuff but you'll overhaul almost any cossie on a long straight because of the gearing......i'll have to disagree with all you guys on build quality the cossie spanked the z on build quality when was the last time you saw a cossie with worn out leather

I'm pretty sure there was a Cossie at TRAX that did a 1/4 in about 9.6 secs which won the competition. Supra guys mentioned it on one of their threads! wink.gif

Mark, I know what you're saying about the Escort Cossie being shown to be sluggish against the TreVoR's etc. But get a Caterham Super 7 and watch Super Car ass get well and truly munched for the price of a new Focus FFS!!! Value for money or what??? biggrin.gif

I've got an old copy of EVO somewhere, they timed a load of fast motors against an R1 on a track. Skyline R32 with about 650 bhp, Stealth Bomber monster, Mitsi Evo, Scooby etc. Only thing that matched the R1's lap time was a Caterham!!! wink.gif Skylark, Stealth and the rest weren't even close. biggrin.gif

forget the Seven, what you need for fast cheap drag racing that would whoop all those super car arses, is a go-Kart with a Honda fireblade engine! saw it perform at the pod last year, the Kamikazi driver had a job keeping it in a straight line it was hilarious to watch, the thing did the 1/4 mile in 10.11 in its first pass then on its second did it in 9.98!!! WTF

LMAO biggrin.gif

See, the smaller and lighter you go the faster and more satanic the speed! Excellent! biggrin.gif

Where can I get me one of those? Bound to be less hassle than a Z. Just not too comfortable for the 500+ miles a week.

tooley, you are having a laugh mate? A Cossie is a Ford Sierra with a turbo fitted to it,Now how can you honestly say, that Ford build quality is better than Japanese biggrin.gif???

Ford = Shit box on wheels, I believe thats the expression.lol. Having owned 3 fords I think I'm entitled to this opinion. The only good thing about them is the cheap parts, but they need to be cheap considering how often they go wrong. Or how about this particular expression which is my favourite.

Ford = Dagenham Dustbin.

I think Hairsy got a nice blue shitbox estate alongside his TVR.

i would gladly trade my z for another cossie any day of the week. as most of you know i drive like a twat most of the time and the cossie was the only car ive ever had that i felt at ease in all the time no matter what i did......dont get me wrong i do like the z but for my money the looks of derision you get when ure in a cossie and then smiling to yourself when you've dusted them is what i like everybody calls cossies but pound for pound they are class

You are right they are class, "lower class!" lol.

Don't get me wrong I liked the cossie when I was young, and it is a quick car, but they are definitly not built to last.

I have been in a few Cosworths, and the traction is good.

But why do people think that the Z is shit at traction. Its fantastic. Just dont slam your foot to the floor round corners.

I must admit when I was a passenger in a Sierra on a trackday, the car was flying round corners, but I have been round corners of the same degree faster than the Sierra went in my Z, and the acceleration out of corners is much better in my Z too.

I looked it to Sierra Cosworths a lot when I was looking at cars, and I was gonna settle for one untill I looked the Z up. Standard Sierra Cosworth is 225BHP you make that close to 280bhp and you are gonna need a rebuild ever year or so.

I like the Sierra Saphire Cosworth cos it looks like a normal Sierra, bar a few suttle differences, giving meaning to the term "Wolf in sheeps clothing"

Then the Escort Cosworth came out with the new body, huge rediculas wing and it lost its appeal IMHO. Also people saying the Escort Cosworth was faster, it rubbish. It was 227BHP standard but needed an extra 500rmp to get it. It was also lighter, but IMHO it didnt perform as good as the Sierra.

It also lost "Secret sports car" image with the Sierra to all out BoyRacer to the Escort.

A mate of mine had a Mk II Escort rally car with an RS500 motor (without the turbos) and that thing was bloody fast. He was beating virtually everything that was 2wd and many of the crappy 4wd drivers (in open class)- but there again he can drive !

He sold it when he moved to the US and the oik that bought it wrote it off on the road about a month later .... frown.gif

Nahhh you're losing the drift here! Tooley is right, tell me that you don't say wow even now when you see a Cossie? I know I do when I see an Escort Cossie, they were the dogs bollox and still are.

It's the overall character of the car, not how fucking fast it hits 60 or top end and all that performance crap about round corners etc. etc. blah blah blah!!!

FFS people stare at my Mercedes Cosworth alot more than they do at the Z(queue humerous comments about it never being on the road to be stared at etc. LOL) which I might add was built in 1987 with 188,000 miles. Wonder what most Z's will look like at that mileage?

Look at the used values on all types of Cossie, them old RS500's are going for fucking how much??? Sapphires are still holding good money but the Escorts are still selling for anywhere from around 10K for a good one upwards. My Bro was telling me he'd seen a Mk IV Supra on an L plate going for 6500 squid the other day, Twin Tub aswell!

Stu Cosworth build bullet proof engines mate, I don't go for the 280bhp rebuild every year scenario! They're basically on par with Skyline engines or Honda technology, churned out of the factory with shite bhp but with a miniscule amount of tuning they're up for massive BHP output with reliability! wink.gif

All IMHO of course.

sig.gif

Tim each to their own,My 3 door Sierra Cossie was shite, would never ever own another one,I replaced it with a S13 and that baby was different class,(JAPANESE) matey it rocks wink.gif.

Depends how many times you go rally-crossing in it wink.gif

Sorry, couldn't resist!

I get a *lot* more stares in the Z (which is pretty silent dont forget, stock exhaust & intake) than I do in my loud, proud Renault..
