Vibrating brakes

I got my cross drilled discs skimmed two weeks ago as i had warped them racing a bloody 928 a while ago but when i put them on they were even worse so i took them to a much better place to get done again, well ive just put them on and test drove it again but when i broke at 6o i thought the car was going to rattle to pieces, Ive checked all my bushes and joints for wear and tear but they seem fine.

Any ideas what i can do.

Maybe you need to do a gentle break in on the newly skimmed surface to even it out. I think a lot of problem comes from inconsistent friction right round the disc so even though it aint warped the resistance fluctuates then the silicon filled tension rod bushes allow the wheel to shake. Check for no goo drips!. On top of this I think the car can end up weaving due to rear steer coming from HICAS reactions.

Also be sure your hubs are spotless before the discs go on and wheel nuts evenly tightened.

Are you sure that all of the pots on your calipers are working ok.

If one side of your caliper has seized, even if there is a tiny but of run off on the disc, you will get a wobble.

Another thought, are your rear discs ok?

Havent drilled discs have the trouble of cooling too quick causeing them to warp?

Stuart

I hear that drilled discs are prone to cracking?

Timmy you junior LOL!

more importantly, did you beat the 928?. I was going to buy one before the ZX but having test driven a few I thought they were a bit 'slow' during acceleration, the S4 and higher have good brakes though and they were the first cars to introduce 4 wheel steering !

Sorry to digress from your thread !

Terry a little bit of advise from experience of testing several brake options.

What ever disc`s you fit they will only be as good as the pads you are using. The technical reasons why fade and warping takes place is too long to go into here but basically heat build up from the pads is passed to the disc`s and visa versa if either are mismatched the result will be a heavy build up of gas under the pad this becomes super heated as it is trapped between the two. This will give the problems you have experienced heating the two components passed their design temp.Did you change the pads after reskimming? either way they needed running in, also did the place where the work was done re-temper the facing after skimming? also one point is after two lots of skimming you have reduced the thickness of the disc`s and if I am not mistaken it is NOT reccomended to skim drilled disc`s unless the dillings have new radias`s cut in.Might be time to start again eek.gif

Yes start again & invest in some new discs & pads. My big bro has a silvia S12 after a day on the track warped his grooved brembo discs. He had them skimmed twice but still no better he did think at one stage maybe there was other damage but in the end he put his standard discs back on & all is ok now.

Drilled discs need to be bedded in correctly otherwise they will be KO'd from the 1st mile on the car.

Not only that but Brembo don't do drilled or grooved discs, that's a myth! Brembo only make the castings then the discs are drilled/grooved or both by someone else.

Which is why the Stillen rotors are such high quality because you would expect them to be coming out of Stillen who don't do anything by halves.

So when you see cheap rotors as Brembo drilled or grooved or both don't think that you're necessarily getting pukka rotors. Ask yourselves why they are so cheap? Any muppet can drill brake discs or even groove them etc. but if it's not done with precision machining the end product is arse rotors!

I got the procedure with my Stillen brake kit and trust me, at that price I will follow it rigerously! wink.gif

Z stock wheels are designed to channel air to the brakes, so maybe going aftermarket you lose some of that extra cooling. Fair to say, but I know where I'm going...straight to SE for their brake cooling kit. Basically channels air to the brakes so taking over the job of the stock Z alloys. Job sorted! Now I know why the wheels have to be on the right way round, coz if they're not you don't get any extra air for cooling.
