only started happening recently - idles ok when cold (say 1600ish) but after 10 minutes of drive the engine will idle at something stupidly low like 550/600rpm. not lumpy just very low. car runs fine normally on all cyls and boosts fine. the thing i only noticed this evening while waiting at a queue for petrol was that when it started idling so low my boost gauge would start to move from the left to about half-left  confirmed by all 3 gauges (stock, aftermarket and controller). give the throttle a tap and engine would idle at 800ish for a sec (boost gauge would go to centre as usual under a bit of gas, then drop to left as normal, but then creep to half-left again when idle back to 550/600!)

checked boost hoses and they were fine but was too dark to check anything else.

only other bits of info i can give are:

* i changed my battery recently with a new one

* i noticed underneath the car there was a wire hanging down from the dead centre of car, slightly to passenger side (say, next to where the cats were). the end isnt taped off or blanked (ive been decatted and had auto->manual conv) - looks like literally ripped out - fuzzy end.

* i have a slight gap in my exhaust where a gasket is missing - makes a farting sound under decelleration but had that for a couple of months now and it hasnt affected anything else

any ideas anyone?

could very well be the exhaust mate, get it fixed then reset your ecu and see how you get on :)

thanks for the replies so far. another suggestion - would the (temporary) location of my number plate be partially responsible for the low idle (ie. across the front grill as in my sig) as well as the missing zorst gasket?

no mate nothing to do with your number plate

My erratic idle turned out to be the temp switch (the one that sends a signal to the ECU). I cleaned the verdigris from the terminals and everything is ok now!

Hope this helps...its easy enough to try it and see :)
