Auto box repairer required

Having carried out all the tests and diagnostics I can think of I am forced to conclude the auto box has a mechanical fault.

Since the box changes to third and fourth when the throttle is released but drops back to second as soon as I touch the throttle I can’t believe that there can be anything too major gone wrong and I know that a lot of auto box repairs will stitch me up for a complete rebuild!

Can anyone recommend a good auto trans repairer who knows the Z set-up or is there anyone on the forum who knows these boxes and wants the job? Preferably in the south but I can travel (slowly) if necessary.

SE will do this, although they use an external company for the actual box repair/refurb. Tim used a place in Watford recently, who would appear to be good. With a bit of research I think I can find somewhere around the NE London area. Where are you ?

I've got an auto box which has a knackered planet gear but everything else was fine on it before that went. Perhaps someone could make a good one out of the two!!

Shaun

Thanks for the replies.

Andy - I'm in essex, just got the car back from SE having just had an engine rebuild (three and a half months). I thort of them be felt that they would probably want me to go for the full rebuild and I dont want to shell out another £1500+.

Shaunmac- Thanks for the offer, mine is a UK spec if yours is also I may take you up on that if anyone can do the rebuild.

AGS in Watford, 1200 squid for a soft rebuild inclusive of VAT. Basically clutches had burnt out on mine and an exchange torque convertor. So far nowt to complain about, have put some miles on since aswell.

I would recommend them and they had my car done within 2 weeks aswell. No messing you about! wink.gif

Hi Tim.

Do you think that AGS would be capable of diagnosing the fault either electrical or mechanical on a Z and just correcting it? Like I said I’ve just spent £4850 on engine and turbos and am hoping to get this sorted for considerably less than £1200

I don't know about that matey, not sure if they'd come across too many 300ZX's but an autobox is an auto regardless of how many gizmos and shite it has with it!

Have you tried swapping your Auto box controller unit with someone elses? I've heard a few people have had a couple of rebuilds only to find that the original fault was the auto computer!

I still maintain that my Mk III Supra used to change alot more normally than my 300 does. It's so all over the place with the changes at times. Hardly any right boot and it decides to hold at about 3/4K for a few seconds and then finally decides to change...weird! But I've learnt to live with it and accept it to just be part of driving a 300. wink.gif

My attitude now is if the thing gets me to work and back on a weekly basis I'm getting more and more of its intended purpose back out of all the money dumped into it! LMAO biggrin.gif

Some peeps have asked me what I'm gonna do with it once it's all kitted and sprayed up etc. Drive it still! I agree with AndyP when he said it would be such a shame to have spent so much money and only drive it at weekends.

Tim – Couldn’t agree with you more. Mine too will be a daily used to get to work car.

As for the Auto box controller unit, I really have no idea if it’s at fault. I have done the flashing light diagnostic and it reports no faults found but I suppose if it was faulty then the diagnostic may not show this.

If anyone has a spare Auto box controller unit for a uk spec I can try and buy if needed or just try and then get a new one please let me know.

You can try my auto box controller if you can't find anyone nearer who can supply one.

My car had a Jap autobox in it but is there any difference between UK & Jap autoboxes?

What year is your car? Mine is a 1990. I think that the year is important because the newer ones are slightly different I think!

I'm in Essex too and you can try my autobox controller if you want, but it is a Jap spec. How about going back to SE and getting them to diagnose the fault, they will have stuff kicking around that could be used for swap-outs etc.

Not really alot else you can do Steve, I know that you don't wanna be slapped with another big bucks caining! If you take it back to SE tell 'em just to try and diagnose as opposed to just signing you up for the Fast Road/Full Rebuild treatment.

Hey mate, noticed that you posted on TT.net and Phuong suggested doing the Autobox diagnostic. You done that yet?

Thanks for the offers smile.gif

I have a mate with a jap spec, I will try his controller (hope it’s the same as a uk).

Tim – yep done the diagnostic no faults found.

It's a 92 (J)
