Well i've finally done it. After a year of yearning i've gone and bought myself a Z! She's a 1991 twin turbo automatic on 90,000miles (Uk car). And yes it lives up to every expectation.

 

Being a Z newbie I really need some advise from you legendary Zed heads. I got a good deal on the car as its on 90,000 and the turbo's have never been replaced. I was therefore aware that they would prob need replacing in the near future but the car was boosting just as it should. The only apparent defect was she was very "sludgy" for the first 2 mins or so from cold start. Today however, the car's only boosting to 7psi which I understand to be 'safety boost'.

 

So guys, do i need new turbo's or are there any other obvious things i should check?

If I do need new turbo's, where can i buy some at a great price? (i have a mechanic friend to do the work)

Failing turbo's do not cause safety boost. Safety boost occures when the ECU receives a incorrect signal or no signal from one of the sensors around the car.

p.s you could have another few years of turbo life. (depending on mileage ofcourse, but many last over 120k)

I am getting the same from mine just now Pete. As the guys say best thing to do is a diagnostic check on it, which should pin point the problem. Keep us informed with how you get on so I know for when I get to the car again.

The car will be in safety boost until it warms up but should then boost higher.

Checking for a good connection on the temperature sensor is an easy one to start with.

those 90,000 mile turbos will last a lot longer iff you keep off the gas untill she warms up fully,as for feeling a little slugish when cold thats normal :) ime the same till ive had my first coffee and fag :x:

Dont let 90k make you believe the turbos are on the way out. My 92 is now on 141k on original turbos. Use good synthetic oil and regular changes and no stupid stuff when its cold and it will serve you well.

Thanks for all your responses guys. I took my mechanic friend out to show him the prob and he seems to think all is okay. I think i'm just a bit over-cautious because its new to me.

 

By the way your rides are awesome! I feel a bank loan coming on for a few mods!
