Hi everyone,

Car's done this about three times now so I think it's fair to say there's some sort of issue developing. When started after being used earlier in the day when not completely cold the idle feels "lumpy". Happens at around 1000 - 1200 rpm. The engine tickover is regular and doesn't stutter, but you can feel a vibration through the whole car in time with it. Only lasts a couple of minutes and then idle becomes perfectly smooth as normal with no vibration. Doesn't happen either when the engine is completely cold after being left over night, or when it's started when already warm. Running climate control or not makes no difference.

Car is a LWB series 2 '93 manual TT. I guessed it could be a cylinder not firing or something like that, but that's a fairly random guess, in which case I suppose it could be either a fueling or ignition problem.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bart

...whatever acts as the choke is your primary culprit - or whatever controls the choke. Works like this... when it's cold the choke is switched on. When it's warm it's switched off. When it's not sure if it's cold or warm, it remains switched of - so you get the lumpyness ...or the choke device is clogged up with oil from the air that passes through it, so it's not being able to act quick enough to varying conditions.

Favourite is to remove it and clean it's airways with WD40 - and check the electrical connections too.

Problem is, I dont know what it's called - is it AIV or something like that - down the top back of the engine ...or there's a warm start regulator that's getting clogged or the electrics need cleaning.

....I could be totally wrong here, as I've not had this problem as mines an NA and as such dosn't blow oil around (in the airways) as much as the TT's do.

Good luck

Jack

Thanks Jack. Maybe I'll do a bit of research into "AIV", whatever that might be... does ring a bell for some reason. Must have seen it mentioned on here.

Cheers,

Bart

yep that happend to me after i played around with the aiv valve!!

turned out to be a vacum leak!!

on the rear of the balance bar, the pipe that goes to the aiv, take it off and hold your thumb over the hole in the balance pipe then give it a slight rev, see if the problem goes away!!

it did for me anyway.

Cheers bud, I'll give it a go. What's happening with your car? Any joy with the insurance?
