Help!!! I have an auto box problem and can't figure it out. It seems that my car won't shift up into top gear on occasion - usualy after I've just used kick down. I'll be doing 70 plus (!!!) and revs are 4000 plus and I seem to be in 3rd (or 3rd overdrive. Has anyone else had similar problems? Also the power light keeps coming on even when it is switched off. Don't know if that's part of the same problem. Anyone got a clue??

Thanks, but tried that. Even without the power light on the box won't shift up. I can be doing exactly 70 and am pulling about 4000 revs. Normaly this is 3000 ish. It doesn't happen all of the time either. One minute everything's fine and the next I have to drive 30 miles in third as it won't shift up even if I lift off slightly.

How much power are you putting through the box? Perhaps it's starting to protest if you have quite a powerful Z.

Yours,

Chris

sounds like mine...i lost 4th about 2 weeks back....it sort of works @ 55-60 but the moment you throttle it just slips back to third...new box req for me...:(

oh IIRC you can change the auto box oil to a fully synthetic type which may sort the prob...not sure of the type but send a PM to Topless

I am so glad to hear that. I gave my car a good boot a couple of weeks ago and noticed the power light came on and I was hoping that was normal under hard acceleration. I get Automotive Hypochondria sometimes when I read posts.

 Guys,

My auto box expired about 15,000 miles after I starting seeing these type of symptoms even though I tried to mitigate them (see below). I later found that I inadvertantly accelerated the demise of the box by fitting an HKS ALC module that is supposed to crisp up the gear change. Do not be tempted by this crude device it wrecks old boxes - period. :headvswal

Better off getting good oil, the level right and fitting an oil-cooler upgrade.

Z centre do a neat one which simultaneously upgrades the engine oil cooler. The oil engine oil cooler becomes the box cooler and the supplied upgrade becomes the new engine oil cooler. :smash:

In the meantime start saving the £1,800 it costs to get the box re-conditioned and replaced. If you are thinking of buying an auto on its original box 70,000 miles is the bang time. You could always do a manual conversion if you want but that costs big too.

So whatever way you look at it start saving.......Of course while you are down there you will want to do turbo's, oil pump, water pump, belts etc, etc. etc. Money pit time............ :wack:

"300ZX's ferrari performance for mondeo price"..........Yeah right but with 300zx running / repair costs (and don't think it won't happen to me)

My 300 has cost me £8,000+ repairs / upgrades in 12months of ownership and believe me it was the best of 18 cars I saw before I purchased. If you have a doggy car God only knows what it will cost to run.........
