Got a few problems after fiiting the HID kit I bought ages ago. Firstly, when I turn the lights on to the first position, the passanger side dipped beam comes on but not the drivers side. When on the second position, sometimes they are both on and sometimes the passanger side will turn off and the drivers side will stay on. There's a 12v supply there and I don't think it's the HID's as I've swapped them over - any ideas???

Secondly I'm having problems setting up the beam spread. I'm getting part of the beam shining upwards as I can see it when I drive under trees etc :( Does the actual HID blulb have to be fitted and a certain angle or is that nothing to do with it?

It's a UK car by the way.

Cheers

I had that problem when I fitted some HIDs myself. Then got myself a new battery and it pretty much solved the problem. From what I can tell the HIDs draw alot of battery power at the start when you turn them on and it's probably because your battery can't supply enough power at the start to both headlights which is why one of them is on first and the other isnt, but once they are on and working at full capacity it should be pretty much all ok.

Not sure if it'll help you but try a new battery I say!

Hello mate,

Already got a new battery.

Hello mate,

Already got a new battery.

have both light got a good earth ?

try sharing the earthing point, that way you know that they both have the same "strength" earth.......

I have installed some neons in the engine bay and one of them wasn't coming on intermittently, once i changed the earth point and shared the earth, there haven't been any problems since.

Andy.....

Sounds like dodgy ballasts. You say you've tried switching them over - have you switched the ballasts without switching the bulbs and then switch the bulbs without switching the ballasts - that way you can try and isolate the problem - bulbs or ballasts.

Also, does your kit have separate "ignitors" - ie, you've got a bulb, ballast and ignitor either side of the car? If so it could be the ignitor that's faulty.

Edit: just had another thought. Some ballasts are very sensitive to being mounted on metal. Try isolating the ballast from the car's chassis by placing it on a bit of rubber.

I have installed a HID kit, the ebay one from OZ. When i turn them on for a split second i get a very powerfull beam then they go to 'normal' which aint much brighter than normal lights. So i still have to use my front fog lights to help me in dark country lanes. Mine is a jap import TT SWB. And when i put the HID's on the interior and dash lights dim noticebly. Perhaps a new battery would sort it hmm.

My HID kit black boxs (ignitors?) are in rubber cases attached to convenient mounting points in the engine bay with tie clips. It dont look pretty but they are very secure.

Vijay,

The problem your having is because UK cars were fitted with dim dip this interferes with the power supply to the ballasts, you need to disable the dim dip by removing the relay in the black box under the bonnet on the passenger side,in some case you will nedd to add a link in the relay base. The poor beam pattern could be because the lamps are not sitting square in the headlight.

Cheers all. Jeff, just pulled out the relay and I haven't got any main high beams anymore. What's the link you mentioned?

I have exactly the same problem and its the ballast pack in my case, I got mine from Outlander on a group buy in 2004 and STILL waiting for a replacement !!!!!!!!!

Sorry Vijay back home now and do not have the info to hand, soon as in workshop tomorrow will mail you/post here.

Don't think it's the ballast as when I swap them over it's still the same.

Outlander - bad boy!!! ;)

I fitted Outlander's kit to my UK car over a year ago. When I had only fitted one side and tried to switch them on, on the 1st setting (sidelights/dim-dip) the HID lamp just flickered like a flourescent light starting. Once both were installed dim-dip simply doesn't work at all as there is insufficient power getting through. Turn the switch to position 2 (proper dipped beam) and all is well.

Sounds more like a bad earth, connection or ballast pack problem to me.

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Xav2075 -Hi mate, I bought two Aussie HID kits, one for me and one for Jimmer my son, they are fantastic. We can now drive the car after dark above 30 mph. We both have imports though.

I have a problem with mine.

swapped both over so proved its not ballast or bulb.

new battery so its not that.

If I start the car and turn em on they both come on.

however, if I kill the lights then put em back on again the drivers side doesnt come on.

Cant remember if it happens if I put lights on before I start engine, but it would suggest a relay somewhere.

Power supply wires.

1) Direct from battery

2) Bigger gauge

Definitly do this, run stock wires to a relay that connects the HIDs straight to the battery
