Buying Advice

Hi there,

I've been looking at buying another Jap car in the near future, and have decided that a 300ZX quite fits the bill.

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to buy a manual TT 300ZX that's actually any good for around £4000-4500?

Are there any buying guides anywhere?

Cheers

Matt

Hi Matt, £4000-£4500 would be an fair price range for decent example, but be carefull there are a lot of bad examples out there and quite often their price does not match their condition.

Keep an eye out on the For sale section on this forum, as its far better to buy from a member here.

If you do buy from elsewhere, then I would also recomend taking along a fellow club member to check out the cars with you.

Thanks for the reply. What sort of year car could I expect to buy for that money? I've owned a few jap cars before, MR2 Turbo and an S14 200SX, and I've always really liked the 300ZX but it's just a bit daunting of the amount of things that could go wrong on it!

I really would like a club member or someone to look at a car with me if it's possible, as no matter how much research I do, there's always something stupid I miss! From an owners point of view, how reliable etc is the ZX? Me and my girlfriend do very minimal mileage anyway (mostly just weekend driving) so would one be ok for us?

Cheers

Matt

Sure, I would recommend getting one that has not been modified. I have a TT and I only get to use mine on the weekend and I love it.

So can anyone tell me a bit about the reliability of these cars?

As with most things - a good one, well looked after is pretty good. Engines should be bomb proof if you change the oil regularly and keep an eye on the oil pressure/temperature, electrics can give some problems as with any 10-15 year old car. These cars are built to do the things other people only wish theirs could.

Of course if you get a bad one and you'll wish you'd bought a Yugo.

Matt - if you go down the NA route, I'm on my 2nd in 7 years - both auto and manual, do all the servicing myself, used as daily driver, and I'm down the road from you in Ipswich. I'll offer what support/knowledge I can as long as your chosen car is also in 'our' region.

Good luck

Jack

Thanks for that Jack, I'll keep it in mind if I look at anything. We're on holiday next week, then I've just got to get the Cavalier work dog through it's MOT and we will be selling the Vectra and looking for a Z.

Thanks for the advice.

Matt
