Hi guys,

Just got me zed through its mot on Saturday, and was driving home from work tonight after picking the wife up.

Yup, you guessed it, belted up the arse by a Mitsubishi Carisma !!

Guy got out and offered his apoligies. After checking no one was hurt he starts to explain that he has just left the hospital where his wife has just lost their child ! Actually felt kinda sorry for him.

Anyways, no one really hurt and damage doesnt seem too bad for my car,

bit worse for him though ! He needs a bumper, 2 lights, grille, bonnet and a radiator !

Question is, coz mine is a jap import and the rear bumper is different from the UK spec car, tell me they wont write it off ??

Rear bumper is cracked a little, back panel is dented, tailgate wont open which means the back panel is pushed in and the bumper support bar is creased in. You never can tell if its any worse till you get the bumper off.

Attached some photos. Away for some beer and a Malt or 2 I think !!

I would of thoght you could get a jap spec bumper cheap off the forum, but make sure you get a reciept. The main concern is the damage thats been done behind the bumper, but I would not of thought they would write it off.

it may become an economical write off like mine is

you get a fat check and get to keep the car

Sorry to here of your accident. Doesn't look to bad, get the boot carpets out and check the floor.

Need to crawl in the back with a crowbar to open the tailgate first !

From underneath it looks ok, but as mentioned, hard to tell till the bumper comes off.

Getting a bumper off the forum is no problem, but if its going through the insurance, it would have to be new parts.

Fell in love with this car and I really want to keep it. Got plans you see. ;)

Alan....

mine got repaired so not a write off plus it is a swb so bloody expensive repair for the garage.

Oohhh !

That looks worse than mine mate.

Alan.

if you really pity this fella that hit you, take it to a trusted garage, get a quote for repair on labour only if you get the parts of here, then offer him a non insurance deal if he'd rather pay cash.

If its going through the insurers, you have to get your moneys worth as it will make you car show on registers as accident damaged thus reducing your resale value.

Just what I was gonna advise mate-a deal between you and the other guy, source the parts yourself and repair it, If he goes for it of course!

The only other way is to go through insurance and buy the car back.

Sorry to hear bud! :(

1st port of call tomorrow is the garage where I work for an estimate.

http://www.trucktecltd.co.uk

Then the Nissan franchise up the road !

A settlement between me and him would be prefferable, but its not my place to say so. Could always turn up at his door tomorrow night with my details and kinda put it in a round about way ! ;)

Well !

Went for my estimate today at a Nissan franchise.

They sure know how to charge:

1. New J spec rear bumper.= ....... £836.00

2. New rear bumper reinforcer.=.....£306.00

3. Rear bumper impact foam.=.......£184.53

4. Sundries.=.............................£26.86

Labour.=...................................£515.20

Paint & materials.=......................£180.00

Anti corrosion protection.=............£15.00

VAT @17.50% Equals a final estimate of

£2412.55 !!

Methinks its a write off ! :(

Can you not get the car written off by the Insurnace, buy her back for (hopefully) a nominal fee and then repair her yourself????

Thats what I am hoping for Phil.

Classic and collectors policy, so I should retain the rights too the salvage.

Might be contacting Luke at the Zed centre shortly for a new bumper as he is a lot cheaper than Nissan. Probably a front one as well ! :)

Guys in work couldnt resist it today tho.

Just before lunchtime the announcement came across the Tannoy !

Would "Carloss" please come to reception !

:xxx: :xxx:

Alan.......

What worries about that estimate bud is the fact you said the t/gate won't open?-there is no mention of rear panel on there either repair or replace??

or is it in with the labour?

If so I take it there gonna whack it out! :D -good luck mate! ;)

Yup, its in with the labour. That and removing the rear lights, interior trim and repairing the boot floor panel.

You can get the tailgate open if somebody holds the release lever up and somebody else lifts the tailgate. Rear panel probably pushed in a wee tadge !

Really want to keep the car as she flew through her mot, and is going so sweet. Will have to wait and see I suppose.

Alan............

like i said mine is an economical write off, ive been ofered three grand and get to keep the car and do the repairs myself

i will also be recieving wiplash money, and because the guy who hit me was uninsured and going through the claims courts (involving solicitors) instead of going through insurance companies it wont actually be classed as an economical write off

smiles all round me thinks lol :D :D :D :D

Glad it worked out for you mate ! :)

The guy who hit me phoned tonight, apoligising again, and gave me all his insurance details. He said he had contacted his insurance company and admitted he was at fault. But anyways, he assures me he has enough on his plate with losing his child and wants it over and done with.

Seems a decent enough guy, so I can only take his word and go through the insurance. Maybe I am too trusting ? I dunno.

To be honest, from what you have said he sounds like an honest and decent enough guy and its just "one of those things". I doubt you will have any problems with the claim at all, and that he will tell the truth to insurence.

Fingers crossed you get the best result for your car and you.

Glad everyone was ok.

Really sorry to hear this Alan mate, hope you can get it sorted for a reasonable price.

...

3. Rear bumper impact foam.=.......£184.53

....

  Thats only 4 feet of polystyrene!!!!!!

I know, I know ! Couldnt believe it myself !

Can of expanding foam from B&Q at a tenner will do the same job. (nearly)

Other funny thing was, on the breakdown on the estimate, its given 0.30 hrs to remove the back lights and centre panel ??

It will take half an hour just to try to get the black gunky stuff off your hands ! :D

Its in the hands of the insurance now, so will wait and see what happens.

Another annoying thing was, most people you talk too say, "are you putting a claim in for whiplash ?" Neither my wife or I was hurt, so its really taking the piss a bit if i did.

Not slagging anybody off for doing it. If you genuinely get hurt then its no laughing matter and by all means, yeah go for it, but I couldnt walk into my doctors and try to kid him on I was sore when I wasnt.

Too honest me, thats my problem ! ;)
