Can i use octane boosters and are they any good?

Featured Replies

same kind of question, but really looking at engine / fuel system cleaning products. not trying to hijack but saves a separate thread. I know someone that might be able to get me some cheapish wynns solutions but not sure if they worth even the lower prices..

Can i use octane boosters and are they any good?

Tried one myself recently out of curiosity, didn't notice any difference.

I use one most of the time. 1 bottle to £45 of 97RON since local garage stopped doing Optimax. Seems about the same performance (as Optimax) but I reckon better fuel consumption. Works out slightly cheaper than Optimax by about a £ per full tank...

I use 500ml of MILLER OILS CVL octane booster everytime I fill up.Costs about £16 a litre. significant difference from just running 95ron (Rep.of Ireland now only uses 95 so i have no choice).

Also a slight improvement in fuel consuption. The engine does seem to run better overall.

sounds promising, anyone got any news on the fuel system / engine flush treatments out there?

engine flush is a NO NO

octane boosters will only give a ron increase on low ron fuel for example 92-95 if you add for example a bottle of octane booster that says "will give 5 extra points above" the fuel your using this usually means you will get a couple above 92-95 but nothing at all if your already using 98-99ron etc

also bear in mind that performance gains using these additives on there own is zilch the gain will come from uping the power in one way or another and being able to tackle or ward off knock/dett more effectively

I use this booster approx £8 a bottle its an American performance product which is now available over here. I use 1 bottle when i fill up and there is definatly a performance increase, But at what cost long term ? :(

Why's engine flush a No No ??

It's been recomended to me and I bought a bottle, (yet to use it though)

There can't be any performance gain you could put 105 ron fuel in and it would have no gain at all, BUT what using a higher ron fuel will allow you to do is advance timing and raise boost etc which is where your gains come from

Firstly, not saying your wrong M8, just don't want to use it if it's dodgy.

It was recomended by M8 with ZX and local mechanic who's into big American cars..

Think it was because I have a "Lazy Lifter" . Well I got a bit of tappet noise anyway.

lol no probs , two problems firstly flushing can and does damage the seals in the engine, so potentially you could end up with oil leaks depending on how aggresive the flush is, secondly the oil pipes supplying your turbo's are very thin as are are the various oil ways round the cams etc I am not sure I would want to break all the crud up just to have it block an oil feed in a turbo etc etc

I know people who have 300's that have flushed them out and been fine I also know a few that have not had good results :(

are you willing to take that chance , if you want to flush the engine out do an oil change with some cheap oil run it until warm empty it out then put some good oil in , will probably have the same effect with out the possible downsides

i have used both 95 and 98 and noticed no differance at all so i agree with ryan, but saying that in my old gsi 24v it did make a differance quite a bit

Cheers... Think I like the sound of the cheap oil "flush" better. Got to be worth a go..

Ryan have you heard of using a good quality diesel oil to flush the engine with as it has a higher detergent quality?

Few friends swear by it.

Yes and ATF etc although I would still stick with just a cheap oil, if you really want to flush the engine, all good oils have a certain amount of detergents in any way

great advice mate, what about the ones that claim to be fuel system flushes? thought all modern petrols came with detergants etc in to keep the fuel system and injectors clean anyways... ??
