Morning,

Got a problem with my neighbours PC. I've formatted and re-installed XP but the PC is running extremely slow. I've run Norton Antivirus and it's coming up with nothing. I've also updated windows. Any ideas?

Cheers

Vijay

Hit it with a big hammer........If that does not work....hit it again with a big boot.

That should re-boot it....... :duffer:

Well it works on a cental heating pump..... :)

Do a ctrl-alt-delete,

check the memory/performance

see if there's not a process causing the problem.

Check memory used is not above physical memory (RAM).

This causes paging, moving of memory from RAM to Hard Disk

which then results in poor performance.

Just a few things to look at.

That's just what I was going to say..........

when you say "slow", in what way? And don't say as opposed to fast... :smash:

Is it slow booting up, changing screens, loading apps etc

Hi,

Cheers for the help. Where can I see the "memory used"?

No offence but why are you trying to fix someones PC for them if you dont even know how to do things like this?

Its in task manager under the performance tab.

Bottom graph is memory, top one is the cpu usage. You want to see if the CPU is always being used and the graph is high. If it is then you need to find out what prosess is causing it. to do that go to the processes tab in task manager and look down the line that says CPU untill you find something with a high number (Nearly 100)

Delete Norton its a pile of shite and slows up pc's ive had many that have done the same thing. trust me delete norton and you should notice a big difference.

yep, slow as in changing screens and loading apps. CPU usage is very low.

What spec is the PC?

Did it have Windows XP Installed before?

Have you noticed a lot of activity on hard disk?

Thats more then likely Norton i had a laptop 2 weeks ago with the same probs i could literally make a cuppa while it tried to load a program as soon as i uninstalled norton and then ran a program called ad aware SE which is free do a google search it cleaned the pc up lovely and is still running nice and fast now.

Yeh,

anti virus programs can slow a PC down.

but you will notice this when you do ctrl-alt-del

and sort the process's into cpu order, you should

find the norton anti virus at the top, otherwise

this may not be your problem.

also if it is using a graphics card, make sure you installed the drivers for it, if not then the screen refresh will not work and it will be very very slow.

right click my computer goto properties click hardware tab then device manager, if there are problems with the vga card not having drivers then it will show as the drivers for the card wont have been loaded and it will be shown in the device manager. you then need to install the drivers for the card, if you are not sure what card it is you will have to open the side of the pc and look for a make and model number, enter that in yahoo as ******** driver and download and install.

Also make sure you are not running out of disk space and do a defrag..

check the amount of RAM anything under 512Mb DDR RAM will run slow under XP, give us the specs and will give you more advice

also send us any errors from the event logs..(system and application)

It seams that removing Norton sorted it. Why would it cause it to run so bad????

Thanks to everyone for the help and advice.
