Hi,

Sorry if this upsets anyone who is fed up answering the same old questions,

but what are the pros and cons of de-catting a T/T ???????

Followed up on loads of old threads, and people seem split on whether it is a good thing or a bad thing.

Damaging the Turbo seals seems to be the most common cause for concern.

Is any power gain noticeable ??

Does it make the exhaust system too loud ??

Obviously it would depend on the condition your Turbos were in, what exhaust system you had, etc etc.

Any proof, or evidence to support either claims ??

Year of manufacture is also an issue for the mot.

Just trying to see what the most popular thoughts are.

Cheers in advance for any input.

Alan.........

seals on turbo,s will only go when you decat if they are on theyre way out already, the t2/t25 style turbo,s would have been designed quite a while before cats were introduced and would have been designed to run with exhausts with very little back pressure.basicaly the same turbo as on the 300 is used on the 200sx which had no cat fitted as standard.

Dr Doolittle. lol

I hate cats but love dogs lol. better noise, more responsive and power gain. Go 4 it dude
Many thanks guys too all who voted, or left an opinion.

No hard evidence that removing the Cats directly caused a turbo seal to fail.

No precise power gain figures either.

We are all in agreement that there is a power gain, but in dis-agreement about the turbo seals !

I am working under the premise that if you have a turbo seal on its way out, any slight oil that does pass will get caught in the cat and be hardly noticeable. Removing the cats would only highlight a problem you already have. Need to fit a new gasket from turbo to downpipe anyways, as mine is blowing, so seeing as its off, will de-cat.

Might be looking for turbos shortly, we will wait and see ?!

Thanks again,

Alan.

I had a custom exaust fitted just after i got mine in from japan mate ,straight through all the way to the back boxes no silencers ,sounds awsome, the next day it was smoking so bad i couldnt see behind me,in my view it does highlight the problem of the seals if there already on the way out.Power gain i noticed straight away it was a significant increase but be aware if you do need to replace the turbos its going to cost a packet.I have a very good mate doing mine so i have saved a lot of money there but whilst the engine is out change a few other things,i've done crank seal, pcv valves, bypass plenum, plugs, cam belt, thurmostat, clutch, rocker cover, gaskets changed pipes, BoV's and cleaned all conections. So far its cost over £2500 pound and its still got to go to zed world and be set up and chipped.it will be worth it in the end but just think before you do it mate.

It's all very easy for everyone to say 'Yeah go for it mate de-cat' but at the end of the day they're not the ones forking out £1500 for new turbos......you've been warned & good luck with whatever choice you make ;)
