Loose steering column

I have '90' TT, which i recently hit a roundabout in! Iv'e noticed lately that when i corner a little hard, the column moves to 1 side or the other about 10-15 mm. I had a quick look, and noticed it has alu slides which dont really grip the column? Anyway, for now, iv'e thrown out the slides & fitted big washers. Is there something i'm missing? or do i need new alu inserts?

    Yes you need new slides they have small plastic pips which stand proud and "grip" the assembly, it is quite common, have seen this many times, one word of warning though, do not be tempted to overtighten the fixing because it WILL shear and that means dash out to replace the cross bar that they fix onto.
