It used to shut itself down after about 15 mins now it is just 2-3 mins

Bought a new battery for it, as at first I thought that was the culprit!

Then I calibrated the battery, and it has gradually been getting worse and worse!

Any pointers, btw have changed the alternator, AFM, PTU, ECU and Oil Pressure sender! :D

Take out the battery and power it from the PSU, this will rule out the battery.

It would also power down if it detects a high temperature (possibly incorrectly). If you press "del" when it starts up (to enter the BIOS) and leave it on for a few minutes this should prevent the ACPI shutting it down due to temperature problems.

Googling the model may show some possible solutions, though generally laptops don't lend themselves to being fixed.

I bought the laptop second hand and have never connected it to the net, but it came with norton and I presumed that the previous owner had used it so never bothered running it!

How do you judge how hot your laptop is getting, by feel or that greddy temp on the A pillar mount :D

:headvswal first of all if you dont use it on the net it prob aint virus but wotever you do dont put a laptop on your lap make sure its on a desk so air can get underneath it see how warm it is by the vents when it shuts down .

Also check your power settings as if battery was foooked it may have reset itself :headvswal

There is probably a vent for the fan somewhere on the case.

By preventing the laptop from loading an "intellegent" operating system (by entering the BIOS), it should prevent it switching off, which would point the finger at Windows just being demented or ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface)

What is the make/model?

have you got any new logitech gadgets on it as my pc did this straight after buying a logitech keyboard and mouse ans it turns out it was dodgy software.

One thing I haven't told ya fellas is that it keeps on running fine if connected to the mains so does this eliminate the overheating theory?

sounds like ur processors overheating (bust fan mebby?), as said already make sure its on a table, and maybe chock it up at the back for good measure..

Have jacked up the rear like a 70's capri and I can hear the fan working, any more ideas ??

sounds to me like the battery has lost its memmory function, best thing is to scrap the battery.

also just for the record guys i do laptop replairs down to component level.

i do a full surface mount repair and can get most parts or replacemnts for them. just for future reference.. of course ;)

if you let me know what model etc i can get you a trade price on a replacement battery

Cheers mate,

The only thing is, is that the battery meter says there is loads of power left in the battery and the battery has it's own indicator which says it has loads of power as well, is this an indicator of memory finction at all?

now i do all that but all i gotta do is try and type properly, talk about fookin spelling mistakes!!!!

the battery will give that reading as being full, basically if the the batteries voltage memory is now on its lowest which means that you could have it showing full but its showing full at 15% of full charge then the batteries memory is fooked, you can usually get it back to normal by draining it to 0 volts check this across the terminals with a meter.

then you put it on charge for the maximum specified time for a full charge not shorter not longer the exact time. this should reset the batteries memory charge. if not then the battery will need replacing.

the most common problem with laptop batteries is that they get to about 10% and then people charge them , this causes this particular problem, you should let the battery fully drain before charging.

A very good app I have found for keeping a real-time watch on mobo temps is this:

http://downloads.pcworld.com/pub/new/utilities/system_resources_tune_up_/MBM5370.exe

Download it, install it, and choose mobo type (it also covers laptops, but nothing too old i.e. pre cpu temp monitoring) and it will display cpu temp & mobo temp on task bar for you. I needed it to keep an eye on my PC at home and found it very good.

as you can see i get through loads of laptops all the time!!

I couldn't swear to it but I am sure I saw some sort of message when it was shutting down once saying something about the charging system not working properly!

I think the charger may be the culprit!

  • Author

OK thanks for the help so far and for bearing with a puting noobie!

Here is what I have done so far:

Checked out charger that is fine!

I got a message on start up about a charging circuit failure but have downloaded the latest Bios update to cure it, the error message does not appear but the problem still carrys on.

The fan kicks in on start up but I cannot hear or feel it after that, should it be running continuely?

The problem still happens when the computer is in safe mode.

The problem GOES AWAY when I just start the computer and leave it in the BIOS!

Does this mean the battery is ok?

Your opinions please gents?

bring it with you when you bring your Tivo up for fixing ...

If you can run the laptop in BIOS mode on the battery then one would assume battery is OK. Have you tried this? See how long the PC stays up.

If you can run the PC ok on mains with the battery removed, then it would seem to either point to the battery or some other fault related to ACPI or battery.

What are your power saving settings? Have you got it set to power down when battery reaches a set level? If you have it set to 5% for example and the battery is not holding a charge then it will shut down very quickly...

are you talking about battery memory like you get in nicads or is this a physical 'meter'?? I'd assume the battery is li-ion which cannot suffer from 'memory'

Computer stays in bios mode with Battery power for ages, not even a hint of it shutting down.

So am I right in presuming my battery is ok?

The computer runs fine and does not shut down when on Mains Power, so I presume this means there is not a fault with the fan, as it would overheat when on mains or battery?

What is the ACPI ?

If the PC stays on BIOS ok while using battery then I would assume battery is OK. Sounds like a software issue...

Have you tried going into safe mode? This would rule out a driver issue..

In Safe mode whilst running on battery power the fault comes back :(

What are your power saving settings?

think this may have been the problem, setting was at three minutes for monitor, but this does not put the computer in stby mode it turned it off and would cause problems in restarting it.

Have adjusted it now and it seems to be ok for the time being fingers crosssed!
