He was going to get an MX-5 (eek!) but the insurance quote was £1200.

What can he get that's cool, not too old (5-8 years max), cheaper to insure. Under £4k.

He's never had a performance car so no 300ZXs!

Mind you, if they wanted silly money to

insure an mx5, these will be silly money too.

Does it have to be a jap car?

A classic Mini Cooper (not the new german rubbish) -

Eternally cool, great fun to drive/own and MEGA cheap :)

We had an old one that I restored and modified, and we absolutely loved it, but had to get something 'practical' when I got the Z. If (and it's a very big IF) I ever get rid of the Z for a bigger car - probably a Skyline - we will definitely have another classic Mini.

240z. cheap to insure. easy to maintain and coooool as hell. or a 280zx t-bars and classic insurance :)

Some good ideas there - thanks.

200SX is higher insurance than MX5 so not an option.

It needs to be 1998 onwards really as he has NO mechanical sympathy or ability (he ran his Sierra for FIVE YEARS and 60,000 miles and never thought to give an oil change - bizarrely it never went wrong though!)

I'm thinking along the lines of Puma, Cougar, Hyundai Coupe, Octavia. Not showbiz stuff but easier and cheaper to run than an MX5 and not too dull.

Cougar isn't bad, Hyundai coupe? nononononononoo. Octavia isn't bad either, didn't they have a gti version? top gear loved it, thats all I remember..

golf deisel I think would be a safe bet for your mate :duffer: But the cougar I think would be a "sportier" option, quite cheap and reliable, and..."sporty!"

Proton Compact GTi (Sprint edition)...very very cool cars, handling designed and built by lotus too, seen these go round corners at silly speeds! And 4k would buy you a nice one on a 51 or 02 plate i guess. Saying that i say a 54 plate going for £5k so you never know!

get an alfa 156, great to drive. granted they will break but the look and sound fantastic! 1.8 with sports pack would be my choice for cheapish insurance

Mazda MX-6. Not that exciting, but a smooth engine that pulls ok. Doesn't take much to make one look nice, set of dished rims and a subtle drop. Shame it's FWD though.

Toyota MR2 mark 1. Much better than the mark 2.

:wack:

MK1s look like washing machines. Hideously dated now and most are rotten.
