I agree james. I went out and bought XP Home for £190 just to be on the safe side. My boy is always updating so I thought it best. some will disagree tho?

Didn't work, iv'e got loads from Emule but not having much luck with any of them.

thanks though

Odd...I have a bootable CD and this is the code. I have never had an issue with it and in fact I sent a copy to someone on here and it worked fine...

I only stopped using it because I got a 64bit laptop...

Sounds like you may have a version of XP that is restricted to certain codes..i.e oem version for a vendor.

Agreed - i've got 2 laptops on XP Pro 1 win2000 server & 2 desktops on XP home - all legal.

I know several people who have worked at M$ all said they have the ability to track illegal coppies - they are really cracking down on cracked software.

J

there is one which will work, im not stupid enough to post it on a public forum though.

And if you dont have a genuine copy then windows update wont work, it checks for a genuine serial nowadays, allthough you can circumvent the check easily.

Just found my other Xp disk and serial never guess where it was????

In the Motherboard box the most obvious place to look derrrr....... hopefully i'll be sorted now thanks guys.

Do you have any idea how they track serial numbers? They use a spreadsheet...

As daft as it sounds, it is true. I was talking to them on an issue with x64 and they confirmed it is true. We also have direct lines to MS as Barclays is so bloody huge and we spend a lot of money with them and the consultants all confirmed it...I thought they were taking the p*ss....

The key I gave works with the cd i have and that is a copy. It also works with the genuine corporate version I have. The CD I have is a copy as I say and it sails through the validation etc as I have been using it since it came out..the very same CD..

depends on your version of the CD mate

corp serials dont work on retail CD's

But yeah they use a spreadsheet - its a bit more complicated than that.

J

not much more complicated tho...they even had to add one to the spreadsheet so they could issue me a new one..haha

Obviously corporate CD codes will not work on retail, as I said in #8.....

I'm all sorted now yeay,

Service pack 2 wont install of the disk, so badly scratched i'm having to download it emule and azerus arn't very happy with me they have been put on hold. haha

you can down load SP2 from the microsoft web site.

You can update it too.

Firstly fail the genuine test.

When you have failed. Click on Tools in the menu bar of IE.

Then Select Manage Add-ons

Then in the window which has opened, select, "Add-ons which have been used by Internet Explorer" in the combo box at the top.

In the bottom part of the window you will see a list of add-ons which is installed into IE.

Scroll down and find one which says something like "Windows Authentication" or "Windows genuine authentication" or a long those lines.

When you have found it, click on it and then select "Disable" at the bottom part of the window then OK.

Close IE then open it and run windows updates.
