Smoothing off of bumpers.

Right, so I'm planning on taking my car to a place in Plymouth who specialise in pearl paints to redo the tailgate and rear bumper.

Now, I've always disliked that awful 'school chair' finish on the bumpers. so as well as having the rear bumper resprayed, I am going to get this finish totally smoothed off. Also want to get the bottom of the front bumper smoothed of this finish too and sprayed.

Has anyone done this? The bumpers are pretty thick, so sanding the finish off is not an issue, I'd just like to see a car with them done...standard bumpers I mean. Rear especially.

Bloody expensive mate, about £60 iirc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You could have a local company, that specialise in making graphics up, make you a full set for a hell of a lot less, in whatever colour you want!

Mmmmm, maybe. I've seen pin strips fitted to cars....and badly. I want the factory look once mine have been sprayed.

I'd personally get rid of the line as well, it really updates the appearence of the car with it smoothed over. Ofcourse you would need to get rid of the texture and line beneath the doors too.

No, the line is staying. Will look too blobby IMHO. Looks nice, but I don't want a car full of filler and I do still want to retain all the original lines of the zed...which is why I bought. :)

Isn't that what James did with his? I wouldn't mind getting rid of the stone-chip ripple on mine as well, especially as I've got some rust to be sorted just forward of the rear off-side wheel arch, and I've got my new rear bumper to paint, could be a good time to have it done.

Anyone know how difficult all this could be (I would still keep the swag-line though)?

I looked in to having the sills smoothed on mine but wasnt 100% sure I wanted it done and it was going to cost an extra £200 so didnt, if I still had origional bumpers then I would have, the pin stripe is £60 and a serious rip off, I went to a local vinyl graphics company who cut them for me about a tenner and enough to do about five or six cars, you wouldnt know they were not Nissan ones as there is no difference.

I had it done to mine all round front, back and side.

Loads of pics for you here.

sorry for off topic, just got excited

I agree with Legrath, you really wanna smooth and lose the line on the doors.

I smoothed the whole car myself using a cheap rotary sander. The sills only take a few minutes because the horrible finish is just painted on.

However that finish is actually molded into the front and rear bumpers so after cutting through the paint you have to essentially resurface the whole lot, its a pig of a job that takes ages and getting into the nooks and crannys of the front bumper is the worst.

IMHO, you'd save a ton of money by sanding them down yourself and then giving them to the bodywork people to put a finish on.

No way, funny that. They may of been friends in the factory.

That came up well. Any close ups of your front bumper?

No sorry, affraid not all i've got.

Just been down to the mechanic (none-Zed related) and was talking about this procedure with him. He said that you can do a High-Line filler on the back bumper, then smooth it off. So after seeing the final results on jaffaZ32's car (which I think looks fantastic  ) I'll almost defo have this done on mine in the new year.

Had the line smoothed off my doors, and planning on getting the line smoothed off the rear bumper soon too.

Not sur if the car will look too smooth at the back then though??
